Mk1 Seats

 Hi all,

Just wondering, as I am 6ft tall, the head rest part of the seats in my Mk1 are just about the right height to break my neck in a crash! Do any of you have or know of good seats that have adjustable head rests so I can raise them?

Ta

Seats from a UK mk2 MX5 will do the trick, like these below and as far as I’m aware should bolt straight in, although someone more learned will hopefully confirm or not:-

(these were mine but I’ve since switched to a pair leather mk2.5 seats which are non
adjustable headrests - and already sold on the mk2 ones) maybe someone on here can help with a pair if not eBay might be
your best bet.

Not sure how much movement there is on the headrest but something like these look like they would do the job

Alternatively the MK2.5 seats are a higher back design but no adjustment.

Might be worth you doing a “foamectomy” too, removing some foam from the seat so you sit lower doen.

Thank you all. Most helpfull Smile

Some later Mk 1s had the two-piece seats reffered to above (certainly mine did) and I’m led to believe that the Mk 2 seats sit you a bit higher than the Mk 1 ones, as you’re around the 6’+ this might put the top of your bonce into the airflow over the 'screen…just a thought.

On an aside, people have taken Mk 2 seats apart and removed some of the foam padding, sounds like major surgery but (apparently) is quite simple to do.

My old seats, now happily residing in Essex IIRC…

Would be great if the headrests were adjustable - I’m 6’2", and though I’ve just fitted new headrest speakers, unfortunately I don’t have ears in my lower neck!

LOL Big Smile. I suppose the average Japanese test pilot must have been 5’4"

They look good, I have the later Mk1 seats with adjustable headrest and i’m 6’1" and I don’t have any trouble with height.

On another note, those seats look like they were recovered, if so do you remember where you had them done?

Avoid the MK2.5 seats as recommended earlier. You will be looking over the screen rail.

The base is higher. Also avoid leather as they tend not to sink down as much

as you can see I have been there

I got them off ebay out of a car that the chap was taking in on the scrappage scheme (it was mint, a real shame), I nearly had his hardtop at the same time but he wanted to let the ebay auction end Sad, I don’t know where exactly but a company around the South Midlands…I know that doesn’t help much does it?!

They were a re-upholster, rather than ‘covers’ and were lovely and comfy (new foam too) but were no use on track, hence they went to jgg who (as far as I know) was/is very happy with them.

Seeing as some of the seats are going for in excess of £350 a pair, I’m going down the bucket seat route.

You can pick up a brand new Sparco Sprint V seat for around £160 from Demon Tweeks. They weigh a lot less (50%??) than standard seats and hold you in a lot better too.

Link to seats.

Unless you’re a mathematical or engineering genius GOOD LUCK!!!

Buckets, once fitted well, are great (although you look a right lemon attempting to get in and out with the roof up Wink ) but to get them to fit well is another issue!

Save your pennies and D’ONT buy the side mounts for the seats, I still have two pairs in my garage! The MX-5 floor is neither flat enough or wide enough to fit them to the seat/floor without some serious reworking of the floor and I can’t imagine that’ll do much for its structural integrity!!!

I’m going for the Sparcos as the driver’s seat is pretty much a direct replacement bar drilling a couple of holes in the runners.

As you say, most seats don’t fit. They are either too wide, the wings hit the doors etc., so the number that do fit seems quite low, and the number that fit easily is even lower!

So I see! I’d love my Laguna seats in there but I think the same thing would happen Big Smile
