MK1 Special edition wheels

Hi there I’m new to the owners club and forum so just trying to get used to how to use it  I’ve been restoring a mk1 harvard over the winter and I’m at the stage where I’m having the wheels refurbished. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do with the centres as the original chrome with mazda written on it is past its best. I believe they are no longer available to buy so I’m thinking maybe a graphics shop could wrap a replica around the centres or if anyone knows if other caps will fit. Any help is appreciated.

You can get various Mazda logo “dome” badges to stick on blank centre caps. Harvard wheels had “Mazda” in silver script on a black background. If you can’t find these, you can get custom ones made, eg

You can get blank wheel centre caps, in various sizes off Amazon etc. You need to pop out the cap and measure the centre diameter of your wheel

If the wheel centres are not broken and just faded, are you able to remove the Mazda badge from the cap ?
If so, you could get some domed gel wheel stickers made to your own design to replace the tired ones…https://www.stickersinternational.co.uk/

Thanks for the quick response to my post I’ve just dropped the wheels off for coating and I’ve pulled the centres out looks like I still have the originals they just had stickers over them I’ll have a look for some new replica stickers to put over the top. Not sure if the chrome centre comes out of these originals.

These might be the stickers you need, they say they’re from special editions.

Thanks for the suggestions I’ll have a look this evening I’ve dropped the wheels off today I’ve gone for a silver and asked for a Matt laquer. The original colour doesn’t look shiney so hoping that they will look as close as possible to original when done.

If that is powdercoat (which I wouldn’t have done), if they apply a lacquer, that will chip. When it does, it lifts away from the powdercoating, and ruins it. On these wheels, the centres had been powdercoated, and then lacquered. The lacquer is peeling off, and the powder coating is ruined. I’m restoring these wheels, but facing issues stripping the powdercoating off. They basically have to be blasted.

Mmmm I’ve had powdercoated wheels on my insignia for a couple of years and had no issues so far but maybe I’d be better just having them blasted and chemical treated then have them wet sprayed instead.

I decided to have them coated and managed to save the original wheel centres and just replaced the original sticker with ones I found on eBay they look great if anyone needs a link to the wheel centres let me know.
