Mk1 Sump Plug Washer?

Help please.

Bought new genuine filter + sump plug washer. When I removed the plug the washers are different as per photo

Contacted supplier who tell me that new washer is crushable and does not need rubber seal, but the bolt has a taper for the seal. Is one OEM if so which?

Any thoughts please?

I bought a genuine Mazda filter + sump plug for my Mk1 some weeks ago, From MX5parts.

The washer looked like yours (the new one). It also seemed too large internal diameter to be a

a good fit over the sump plug. It didn’t look crushable to me, it looked like just your average flat washer.

I drew MX5parts attention to the diameter , on eBay, and they apologized. I believe the Mk2 sump plug

is larger diameter, so I think the washer would have fitted that ?

Anyway, with the car out on the driveway, empty of oil, I decided to re-use the old washer.

Seems fine.

I had this problem when ordering a filter and it came with a washer, the washer didn’t fit my Mk2 sump plug. It wasn’t like your washer though, just ordinary flat washer.

I have since bought a selection of copper washers to cover most uses on the 5. I have also reused washers, if not bent or chewed in the past.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the quick response, I have looked again at the washer and as you say it does not look to be crushable. It is the correct diameter and would sit against the underside of the bolt head but because of the taper would very easily slide out of place when being screwed in horizontally. Like you I have decided to reuse the old washer which looks in good condition and had just refitted it when the rain started. So await a better day to refit the filter and do a few other jobs.

The silver washer is the correct washer for your sump plug (19mm?). Mazda did issue a technical service bulletin about ensuring that the washer is correctly seated in the flat part of the plug when installing it. NBs have a smaller 17mm sump plug and a smaller washer. The washer with the rubber seal is not a Mazda item.

Thanks Robbie,

That’s what I wanted to hear, interesting that I was right regarding problems seating the washer and I wonder if my non standard washer is a means of alleviating the problem. Out of interest does the sump casting have a matching taper that the bolt mates with as if not the rubber part is wasted as a seal and only serves to locate and retain the washer.

When the rain stops I will swap the washers over.

Many thanks once again

Dave

The aluminium one is the correct one and will self centre due to the chamfer on the drain plug. The one with the rubber insert is known as a “dowty” washer/seal and is mainly used on hydraulic systems.
