MK1 U shape Roll Bar

 Hi

I have been given a few parts for my MK1 Mx5 1997 -  one of them is a U shape roll bar from Mx5parts seen below at the link.  Has anyone fitted one in a Mk1 or got any photos?

The instructions that come with it are not very clear at all.

Looks like it involves removing or cutting into the plastics to fir the triangular chrome fittings.  Would like to make sure though!

Any help appreciated.

I found this on their page:-)…

Fitting Instructions

Cheers - I didn’t notice that.
That is what I have in paper form.

Its still not clear though as my MK1 has 2 points where it shows one. I have the seatbelt anchor point and the brace.
There is also plastic trim which looks like it must come off to fit. Would like to make sure before I go cutting holes in it.

Ideally looking for someone that’s used this type before to give me some confidence!

I read some of the reviews and there is more than one comment about fitting not being as easy as it should be and the instructions not 100% clear.

One of the reviews mentioned that they had the bar fitted by MX5Parts so probably worth working out how you think it should be fitted and then calling them to confirm before you drill the two 12mm holes. Easy to drill, very difficult to undrill:-)

Seems simple enough to me.

quote:- " Align the mounting plates with the roll bar holes (11mm) and bolt and torque the side mounting plates with the countersunk screws M12x30 "

Push the 12mm c/s screws through the 11mm holes… easy peasy   ( I might have read that wrong ) I can see some cap heads but no c/s.

If you wish to fit a “Style Bar” then just go for it.

If you have a cabin brace then I think this needs to be removed.

I’ve fitted these before, and it uses the seat belt bolts, no cabin brace bar. Plus a hole drilled through the side “triangle” to match the
hole in the stainless steel support, each side. When I did the first one I was worried about the HRW connector but it didn’t get in the way.

Think very carefully about this

Can your head contact the bar over the seat. (if you are tallish) if so sell it, as it will give you a hefty blow if the car is in a front or rear crash

It will be worse than nothing in a rollover as it will fold onto you

Not a bad point. Did see some bad photos of that.

Did you have to take out or cut into the plastics  ?

Cant seem to see where there would be enough room for the bolts through the triangle without taking all the interior plastics off?

Thanks

No I didn’t remove the plastics, drilled through after checking the HRW connector was in the clear.

Thanks - got it fitted this afternoon and looking good.
