- My model of MX-5 is: 1999 1.8 Mk2
- I’m based near: Cheltenham
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Exhaust/Cat replacement
My Mx5 has been struggling to get through MOTs on emissions on C02. Last year it just about scraped though after changing the Lambda and running cataclean through it. I had to rag it to get it hot before the re-test too, and even then the MOT tester had to heat the engine up loads to get it in.
This year it took 3 re-tests before it passed, with another new Lambda and MAF being fitted help it through.
It’s still on the original catalytic converter, which I believe is the root cause of the poor emissions. The rest of the exhaust system is looking a bit sad too, so I’m potentially in the market for a complete new exhaust system.
Firstly, is it likely to be the Cat that’s causing this? The engine is on 150,000 miles, so it’s well worn in. I’m not sure if there is anything else that could be the cause of this?
The air intake system was compltely stripped down and cleaned through, including all the EGR channels and valve, so I don’t think it’s EGR related. It’s had new sparks, coil pack, HT leads etc, so doubt it’s related to any of that.
Assuming it is the failing cat, can anyone reccomend a replacement system.
I’ve heard that the cheap catalytic converters can last a very short time before they start having issues, so that is something I’d like to avoid!
I’ve just had the Sills and Arches repaired and only got the car back this weekend, so next year after I’ve financially recovered from that big expense, I’ll look at purchasing a new exhaust system.
Thanks!
