Hi all,
My MK2 2000 keeps getting the locks picked (hooray). Before the toss pots take the car completely I was thinking of fitting an aftermarket alarm system.
Currently looking at the Avital 3100LX.

Has anyone else got experiences with aftermarket alarms?
Thanks,
Freddie
I’ve not fitted one for many years, but I guess anything which makes a sound is better than nothing.
What about one of these

Looks much more effective than my lazy cat!
Yeah going with a 120dB alarm I am trying to scare the living ■■■■ out of the idiots breaking into/in the car. I live on a residential street and my car is directly outside my flat, so people would be outside in no time telling me to shut the f**king car up, which I have no problem with as long as there had been a genuine break in!
And I can get the alarm off ebay.com for <£50 so I think I’ll go for it.
I just want to know if others have good experiences with other alarms ![]()
If I was buying an after market alarm I would want it to include an immobiliser unless you already have one fitted. In addition you could buy a visual deterrent such as a steering wheel lock so that hopefully they won’t attempt to break in the first place.
in years gone by they could be complex or simple.
Some had engine immobilsers that had to be wired in to numerous systems, some had IR sensors, some with central locking activation.
Some had only 2 wires, one to each side of the battry, upon detection of a voltage drain (interior light coming on), the alarm would trigger.
Others had a third wire to a door switch.
The simplest one I ever had, had a key switch on the outside of the car. (late 70’s)
The one you posted, looks very complicated.

Personally, if all you want to do is scare them off, then I’d keep things simple.
Yeah I just want a siren to scare them away.
I don’t really know what I am looking for, I feel like these cheap eBay/amazon models for like £20 are all going to be totally inadequate, and I don’t want the alarm going off and pissing people off unnecessarily.
Unfortunately, this did not stop them!
