My 1.6 mk2 is running rich. I’ve just had it serviced - new oil, spark plugs, Magnecor HT lead, cleaned K&N filter but all this didn’t solve the problem.
I get really bad mpg - around 23mpg. Also the new spark plugs fitted just a week ago are sooty black (DRY not oily) and the exhaust gases are stinky.
Am I right is suspecting I have a faulty O2 sensor.
Also could someone please confirm how many O2 sensors does a 1.6 1998 reg mkII have?
This issue is no sorted thanks to the guys from Dandycars.
As I haven’t been able to solve the problem myself I went to see the guys from
Dandycars on Saturday afternoon. They took the car for a spin and advised me
that in their opinion my mx5 is underpowered, runs flat and this might be due
to a misaligned timing belt.
I booked a service with them and their
diagnostics was spot on. They replaced the old timing belt, tensioner and idle
pulley. On the test drive they identified I had a faulty air flow meter.
Luckily they had a 2hand one in stock so that was replaced as well. The car is
back on the road now and runs smoother than ever.
I am really happy with the services provided by Dandycars; I would highly
recommend them to everyone.
With regards to above ‘ill-disposed’ comment all I would like to add is:
I saw the MISALIGNED CAMBELT and it was very old due for replacement
they didn’t suspect a faulty air flow meter because I advised them I had
previously double checked and cleaned the air flow meter, air filter and
replaced the spark plugs + ignition leads myself. Therefore they could ONLY
identify the faulty air flow meter after they replaced the timing belt which
they did.

AS I’VE ALREADY SAID I AM 100% HAPPY WITH DANDYCARS AND WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THEM TO EVERYONE.
…but if it was misaligned.surely it would have always been bad, since the time the old cambeltwas replaced. they are either timed.or NOT timed correct.??? did the previous owner overlook the poor performance?stinky exh? etc.
I haven’t had the car for long - this is my 3 week of ownership.
The
car was a part exchange I bought extremely cheap from a dealership. It
had 10 previous owners and had no service history. From day one I had
problems with the high mileage. After I have double checked and replaced
everything on the car and had no other option/ideas I found Dandycars
and decided I will go and ask for their advise.
They gave me an honest opinion of what they suspect might be the cause of the high MPG and they were spot on.
They seemed honest and I have no reason to suspect they tried to rip me off.
There will always be times when you are pleased or not pleased with a garage service.
I used Dandycars a couple of years ago, soon after I bought my car. Being new to the MX5, I had little idea of where to take it to apart from dealers. Dandycars carried out specific work tasks for which I supplied all the parts. Their service was prompt, they loaned me a car to get home and back in, (minimal charge, only had to add fuel) and their labour charges were reasonable, so I was pleased. I have also heard others say to avoid them, so who knows. Horses for courses. LS is happy with how he was treated and so was I.
The guy took his car in running like a camel, Dandycars fixed it and he’s happy, what the hell is wrong with that. Some people will find fault everywhere…enjoy your car LS…
I’ve been in London for about 4 years now. I have owned a few cars and been to a few garages. Trust me when I say this: apart from one garage based in Wembley Dandycars is the only garage I would consider using again.
I had really bad past experiences were garages tried to rip me off…
