MK3.5 Drivers side glass replacement question

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2010 MK3.5 2.0 with a folding hard top

I am delighted with my new purchase, a 2010 MX-5 MK 3.5 sport tech 2.0 - with the folding hard top. Its lovely, I am smitten as a first time owner, and old enough to know better!

The car has a few minor rough edges and the biggest one that narks me is the driver side window is scratched to buggery from years of grinding on dirt from windows up and down a million times. I’d like it changed, MX5 Style!

1st Question - are all side window replacements for hard and soft tops the same size? Are they the same colour? I’ve seen some second hand ones for £40, but worry about getting something still scratched, so might buy new.
2nd Question - can it be removed without taking off the inner part of the door trim? Do any of you have any clever tricks, I read somewhere you just yank and it comes out?

Advice for a newb is always most appreciated!

R.

I think a visit to the dealer and enquire about a replacement. They’ll need your car details and I suppose will look it up on the system.
Regards second hand, you always take that risk of it being scratched like yours if you can’t actually inspect it.
I don’t think yanking it out will be an option, door card removal necessary.

Thanks, I might just go with the autoglass option - lets see how much, waiting for a quote.

If you yank it and it comes out … getting it back in again would be a magic trick.

Inner door card off and with the window lowered to the correct height to expose two screws/bolts and it lifts out.

Ditto for replacement. Should not take Autoglass more than 20 minutes. Only problem could be the colour and level of tint.

If you in the South West I can show you a good spare.

If the glass is scratched I would also suggest replacing the lip seal that created the scratches, easily changed with the glass out.

I’m in London.

Thanks for your advice, sounds like an easy job.

I will at the very least clean those lip seals - aren’t they called weather strips?

Cheers!

Depending how deep the scratches are you could get it polished. It’s incredible how deep a scratch you can polish out. I’d recommend trying something called ‘cape cod’ first, clothes that you will look at and turn up your nose. But trust me they are made from actual magic dust. If they don’t work a pro polish could save you ££££

Wow thanks, I never knew you could polish scratches out of glass. Cape Cod, here I come!

I collect watches and cape cod is highly regarded in those circles for polishing stainless steel and glass. It works very well indeed. It’s not cheap at about £7 for a pack of 2 wipes but you cut a small piece off at a time and they last ages.
I had a new patio door last year with a heavy scuff in the middle of one pain of glass. The company did come out and look at it and agreed without quibble to replace it free of charge but I had a go at polishing it out all the same. Nothing would touch it. It was the wife who suggested trying cape cod and it removed the scratch in seconds. It was deep too. The company was pleased as you can imagine when I told them I had managed to polish it out because they usually replace such damaged pains because they can’t remove the damage, apparently it’s something they get now and then from pains of glass rubbing together when they are in transit. They said they would be investing in some cape cod lol.

Sounds like good stuff. Would it be suitable for windscreens too do you think?
Do you have a link for suppliers please?

I got mine from eBay. I expect it’s useful anywhere within reason. I can’t tell how deep your damage is but it’s impressed me anyway. :+1:

I found plenty of articles to do with polishing metal but not glass.
Has anyone tried other metal polishes on glass? (Solvol Autosol etc).
