My first post!!
So the only real problem with my recently acquired 2013 model is that the driver side wing mirror glass is flapping horizontally.
I want to get the mirror off to take a look inside, as to whether it’s just come unclipped, or it’s had a knock in the past and something is broken.
Anyone have advice on mirror/glass removal?
Cheers,
Steve
The glass part just clips in, it’s has poppers on the reverse which locate on the nylon cogs/motor mechanism.
You can either try pushing it back on to see if it locate, clicks back in place or remove it by pulling it off. Yes be brave it does just pull off. Wear gloves though just as a precaution.
There’s nothing to be gained by removing the whole door mirror body for inspection, I’ve tried, the stuff you need to inspect is behind that mirror glass.
Great, thanks.
I just pulled it off, very easy with a plastic level behind it.
The glass bottom popper had come off.
Just needed taking off, realigning and a good hard push in the right place on the glass.
All good now.
Cheers,
Steve
I have tried to replace the glass after the outer shell had to be resprayed. The centre fixing and the upper electrical mirror mechanism have gone back in place but the bottom fixing refuses to locate. If I push against the glass in the right place, the electrically operated plastic piston just gets pushed back into its housing. I need a way to hold the piston in place but there is not enough of a gap between the glass & the mirror housing to get a suitable tool in to hold the piston. I have tried long-nose pliers, a long screwdriver to no effect. Any other suggestions?
Hiya don’t know if you’ve managed it but I had exactly the same problem, tried long nose pliers, wedging a thin screwdriver in etc, so, this is a bit drastic, but here you go, fully extend the piston outward, then use a drill with a 1/6th" drill bit and drill very gently right through the piston at an angle till you feel the drill bit just coming through the other side of the piston, then If you can, try and release the chuck leaving the drill bit in place. You can now push against the plunger with the mirror glass, the drill bit stops the plunger retracting, once clipped on all you need is a pair of long nose pliers and gently pull the drill bit out. The centre and side fixings then clip on no problem. The little hole doesn’t affect the plunger operation at all ps, don’t forget to grease all the sockets. Hope I’ve explained it clearly enough
Thanks so much for the guidance! I wouldn’t have considered drilling through the piston because I would have been worried about damaging the worm drive I assume is used to move the piston in and out.
I removed the motor assembly from the mirror housing to make drilling the piston easier, it’s only held in by 3 small screws. Instead of using a drill bit to stop the piston moving back I used a length of 2mm+ galvanised wire which extended out between the mirror and housing because it was easier to withdraw after the glass had been correctly secured.
Anyway, job done! Thanks once again for an excellent solution.
That was a brilliant option, I did see those 3 screws but didn’t fancy taking the housing off in case things and springs fell out
I was very gentle drilling the hole, the piston felt hollow so carried on right through, anyway, excellent, pleased I could help
The housing is a complete unit which is held together by 2 plastic clips, so it remains intact when the 3 screws are removed. You can’t move it very far from the mirror housing as the wiring is quite short, but far enough to allow drilling straight through rather than at an angle.
Ahh right, thanks for that, will keep that in mind for the future
