I am about to start working on upgrading a mk3 with a lot of things, this is a 1.8 model and as far as I was aware it didnt have ABS (no DSC button like my 2.0 model)
Few questions about this as I have not looked at the 1.8 in over a year (its in storage)
is this the case that the early mk3 1.8 that doesnt have the DSC button have traction control and abs?
When reading about the ABS systems on these cars the info I have found said that they are built into the wheel bearing and they use a magnetic sensor - while looking at wheel hubs and bearings some pictures have what looks like the abs reluctor ring on them (quick google search) however on places like mx5 parts they dont seem to have them and further to that point they dont seem to sell different ones depending on car model - is there a difference between the 1.8 and the 2.0 bearings? (the answer might be part of question 1)
If they are different, what is the differnce and it looks like verry few people stock the abs ring (only found some ebay listing) but if they are built into the bearing how do they fit?
Afaik the front bearing hub assembly is an integral assembly with no facility for dissembly. There are different part numbers for abs and non abs hubs.
As above. ABS and traction control and dynamic stability control are different things. You can turn DSC off on 2l cars, 1.8 does not have it to turn off.
Thanks for the info guys! I was able to check the car (at least the front) and sure enough it has the abs sensor as duratec NC stated.
Isn’t the DSC mostly controlled by the wheel speed (if I remember correctly there is also a sensor for the direction the car is facing too) I find it a little odd Mazda didn’t add the DSC to the 1.8.
If you want to upgrade a non DSC to DSC you will need the Yaw sensor, the DSC switch, the ABS pump from a DSC system and the master brake cylinder to match it as the pipework is a different size. In addition you also need to change the front of engine wiring loom as the plug on the DSC ABS pump is different to the non DSC installation.
At the same time I also installed the ECU as I upgraded the engine to 2.0ltr so you may need the ECU as well if the 1.8 ECU does not have the DSC onboard, that I do not know.
The upgrade is to a 2.3 disi turbo - I got a donar car and so have the full DSC system from that, the wiring loom is being swapped out with the ECU due to that engine using a different ecu for DI and turbo
the yaw and roll sensor I have also got so shouldnt be an issue.
The 2 concenrs from what you put is the steering position sensor, I got one from the donar car (CX7) but not sure if it will fit the MX5 and the master break cylinder
I also got the master break cylinder from the donar car but that may involve a lot more work, would probably look at some sort of an adapter if its just pipe size - will look into this and do more research!
