Mk3 Air filter

coming up to service time; anyone used this Cosworth filter? If so, is it OK? looks different to normal.

I have no issues with piper cross etc, just asking the question

One of the Grampian members used one on their Mk3.

Apart from being more expensive and a different colour it made no difference.

thanks.
by the way, it’s cheaper on fleabay than the mx5parts filter prices.

thanks for letting us know, I was considering buying one but wondered would it make any difference worth noticing, think I will save my money .

I know its an old thread, but from what i have heard the Cosworth filters better at the actual filtering at the fine dirt which protects the engine more, but doesnt have as much claimed flow as say the Pipercross.

Pipercross claims 30% extra flow
Cosworth claims 10% extra flow but more filtration

I know some Mx5 racing series use Pipercross filters as standard so they cant be that bad at filtering as long as you dot forget to service them.
I personally would like the extra filtration of the Cosworth, but really like the sound of the Pipercross and potential better induction noise.
Never really been a fan of the K&N.

I’m trying the mx5parts aftermarket filter this year.
can’t do any harm, probably won’t choke the engine & it’s cheap as chips; be interesting to see if any noise difference.

which aftermarket one are you referring to?

we will see if any difference to the cosworth

Thats just a copy of the bog standard air filter so will make no improvement over a standard Mazda filter.

It is very obvious when you do a used engine oil anlysis of a car if there is any problem at all with the air filtration.

Can you please post a used engine oil analysis of a Mk3 or Mk3.5 engine with a stock air filter that shows the lack of filtration with the standard air filter that would give you any reason to doubt the filtration of the standard filter.

Always here to learn!

im not sure of you have misread my comments, my point in my first reply to the OP was to say that if you want the best filtration stick with standard. I watched and read tests that marked aftermarket as having the best flow but not filtering the air as well as Standard.

Obviously the environment and where you live will have different conditions, someone who lives by the coast a sandy and dusty area maybe would think about filtering more than air flow. Vs someone on a track day who does regular servicing due to the nature of the driving they do.

At no point have I said the standard filter lacks the filtering properties that are needed.

If using an MX5 that’s your low mileage annually serviced second car & not doing trackdays etc.; does whichever air filter really make an iota of difference to performance or engine wear?

What Joe said if its got a filter ,its better than  having one that is not serviced !!!

I’ve got one of those fitted Joe, it’s not blown up yet it doesn’t go any faster either.

Got the piper Cross one in mine, rather then the K&N. Seems to be a happy car with it

that’s because it hasn’t got Cosworth stamped on it

Prior to the above quoted post you said  “I personally would like the extra filtration of the Cosworth,”

I will not comment any further than to say if the standard filter provides the “best filtration” it is confusing to understand what “extra filtration” the “Cosworth” provides.

Yes I understand your statement now.

I was saying the extra filtration over over the piper cross and k&n NOT the standard, the material of the cosworth is a better filtration, but does not have as much of an improvement on air flow with 10% more than standard and 20% less than piper cross. It’s hard enough writing this on my phone so sometimes my meaning can get lost in the text. So I appologise For that.
