Mk3 broken Door Mirror

I’ve seen a few posts about broken mirrors on the forum and in a post I saw the following: by Keat63, (I’ve tried to see if I can link to the post and quote it but haven’t managed it so sorry if this is the wrong way or looks messy).

My mirror has, like mentioned in the reply broke the shaft inside, but I can’t figure out how to put the shaft/mirror back into the correct position, everything thing seems fixed, can this be done? I’m not fussed about it not being able to be folded back. I’ve added some photos of my mirror to show its current state

Many thanks!

where’s the nut and bolt ?

Running through the middle should be a long bolt.

If you tighten that bolt enough, the mirror will hold, but you can’t fold it in any more.

The way around this would be to re-assemble it the best you can with the glass out, but don’t tighten the bolt too much just yet.

It needs to be a fit floppy.  ooo er.

Refit it to the door, twist the mirror in to position, tighten the bolt enough so it holds under its own weight, then refit the glass.

Hi, I’d seen the post using the copper pipe and mig wire etc, but that’s beyond me…

With regard to the bolt, I haven’t got one, should there have definitely been one? That would make life a lot easier…

For the time being I’ve managed to rotate the head to the right angle and have it back in place using “Sticks like ****” and some amalgamating tape. It’s been untouched for 72 hours now and I looked at it this morning and it’s secure.

Next step is to take it out on the road and see if it holds, I have the A30 and lots of bumpy Cornish lanes nearby so that will test it!

 ( I think 50/50 )

Is it a MK3 mirror ?

Mine definately has a long bolt with a washer at each end.

The washer has a cut out to allow for assembly. (I made a modified washer when I did mine)

I guess it’s possible that the nut and bolt fell in to the bottom of the door, and maybe also possible that the washer fell out from under the glass and on to the road somewhere.

If that was the case, then the mirror would have been dangling off the door, held only by it’s wires…

Edit:

I’ve looked at the image you posted and the ones with the copper insert, and I don’t see a bolt anywhere, so I wonder if there are two types ??
