I have broken the front offside droplink, but need my car is it still safe to drive until I can get it replaced, and if so will I be damaging anything else in doing so?
Also how difficult is it for the ham fisted amateur to do the replacement.

Hi Mark, it would be a good idea to cable-tie the broken link away from being able to damage anything near-by, the car is fine to drive without the drop-link (some of the MX5s at Castle Combe on monday had their anti-roll bar drop links disconnected)
Not a tricky job to replace but really you need a trolley jack (and axle stands for safety) to raise the car both sides at once otherwise jacking one side only will make the job a lot harder as you would be causing the opposite link to fight you.
Good luck,
Dr. Eunos
Thanks taff, got a new drop link on order, will see what I can do to fit it myself.
Hi
Not that simple a job. I broke one and stayed at the garage whilst new one was fitted. They had to grind off nut which was seized solid. I have heard of this problem from other members. I agree no problem to keep using car without.
Cheers
Jim
Here is a link to a guide from past issue Soft Top Hardtop if it’s any help.
That is just the job, thanks Robbie.
Ok so I have managed to get the bottom bolt off with plenty of penetrating oil and elbow grease, but when I try and turn the top bolt the roll bar just bends until I run out of room. I have even tried using the jack to turn the nut against the weight of the car, anyone got any other bright ideas?
Very carefully hacksaw down both sides of the nut, parallel to the bolt, keeping the sawblade as close as possible to the bolt, do not saw into the roll bar. When the saw blade is almost in contact with the roll bar stop sawing and split the nut with an old screwdriver. Obvously a new nut is required.
Regards Geoff Peace.
It’s probably enough just to saw down one side, once the nut is split it’ll loosen off.
Just found this thread as after replacing my rear drop links this weekend, Im now finding a gentle clonking noise under breaking, so I assume it’s the front drop links now
Anyway, I found when doing the rears that it is best to undo the top bolt ont he anti roll bar first - if the bottom nut is still attached to the lower arm, it will give you something to brace against and stop the roll bar bending under pressure.
I realised this would of made things easier only after doing it the other way around
