Is this a common mod? Can’t find anything about it but seen it done on a Eunos.
Its not “common” because these are completely different cars. You might as well ask why fitting Jag Xj8 back boxes isn’t common.
If you are looking for twin exit exhausts, there are several ready made systems available from MX5parts/ILM, Racing Beat and others.

And this is why the NC exhaust won’t fit
NC Exhaust layout
Well I know it’s been done as a car I’m looking at has the change.
Sounds a bodge job. The only reason one would go through the pain of fitting that, and ending up with a poor flowing exhaust is because the back box fell off the back of a lorry. Its plainly obvious from looking at the underside of a NC and comparing that to a NA exhaust layout why this would be truly awful.
Do you not see the problem?
Post some pictures of it here and people will be able to advise.
Sadly I don’t have photographs of the underside of a car as I haven’t brought yet. I only know what I’m being told by the seller who didn’t fit the exhaust himself.
The original reply didn’t show the underside of a MK1 so I couldn’t see the problem with connecting it up there.
I
i would assume its just a dual exit exhaust as fitted to my mk1
mine was cobalt but others are available…
Similar but it’s a Cobra exhaust fitted by them; I’ve got an invoice for it.
So not a Mk3 exhaust fitted to a Mk1, but a Mk1 exhaust fitted to a Mk1. Glad that’s sorted out.
Things to watch; these systems can be rather boomy, and not in a good way. When going around corners, the tailpipe on the nearside can bang about a bit. Ever since I get my car back from sill work, it does this when cold. I need to get under the car and explore what is going on. Some people can make an awful job of adding the extra cutout (Racing Beat does a nice template).
When cold, exhaust gases will prefer existing on the near side.
Well, Cobra say they don’t make MK1 exhausts but they do do custom work so tbh I’m just as confused as seller insists it’s a MK3 ????.
Thanks for the advice.
PS this is the invoice;
“Mazda MX5 NA” = Mark 1
Yes; the exhaust was being fitted on MK1; but I’ve been told it’s a MK3 exhaust which appears unusual. I called Cobra and they don’t manufacture MK1 exhausts so the info I have that it’s a MK3 seems accurate.
That invoice is for a one off centre pipe and work to a customer back box.
This must be the car for sale, from an old ad, before it lost the personal plate
Clearly a mutant rear box. No, not popular, as it cost £320 to get whatever rear box this car has connected up.
And an old ad

I spy a MX5OC sticker on the bumper, and a 20 years club sticker on the passenger quarter light, so someone from Sheffield might know this car. The owner was a member of this forum. Maybe he’ll be along to explain the set up. Safe to say this is not a popular conversion.
Thanks; that is the car and that’s very helpful! When you say ”not popular “ and “mutant rear box” what do you mean? Is it something that would/should give second thoughts on purchasing it?
BTW this is the one the insurer said was a V limited as per my other post.
Not very popular as in I can’t recall anyone doing this. Mutant rear box is taking an exhaust from one car and fitting it to a completely different car. The Mk3 and M1, essentially, share no parts 9the wing indicators are the only common part). The engines are 100% different. It would put me off because its a bodge because the owner got something for nothing (a back box) then paid virtgually the price of a new exhaust to get it fitted. Such exhausts have clearance problems, awful back pressure issues (essentially, there is no design element), and the compromised fit can lead to premature failure of parts of it.
It’s got an exhaust. It looks good.who cares!
Looks like he wanted something quieter than the usual MK1 exhaust;
^^^ Well did you buy it??
