MK3 NC Steering Wheel Advice

Does anyone know if the steering wheels without cruise controls are the same basic wheel underneath as those with cruise and therefore interchangeable? ie: Is it just the cover panel and wiring that’s different but both use the same physical wheel.
I fancy getting Royal steering wheels to do their magic on a wheel for me but don’t want to send them my own wheel if possible so I’m thinking of buying a used wheel to send them instead, but are they all the same?

When I stripped down my NC1 wheel to re-cover it - the button sections just pop out so I see no reason why a cruise control button section would not clip in place of the non button part.

I have a used wheel you can have… It’s a bit chewed up (leather) but still solid… Can send it to you to use while you have yours recovered or direct to royal.

Just cover postage cost for it and it’s yours!!

And yes, agree with CBR deano … Wheel is the same for all control configs plus Royal do a great job, did mine same as deanos…

Yes, same physical wheel. Just has the clip on section for cruise, on models that had it.

Thanks Deano, that’s what I was hoping :+1:

Thanks for confirming that Wardy5 :+1:

Thanks GCZSPORT that’s really kind I’ll definitely take you up on your offer! :slightly_smiling_face: I’ll drop you a private message to arrange things. :+1:

Royal have a small float of MX5 steering wheels so they can upgrade one of those to your spec and then you send them your old one. Or if they fit it swap at the appointment.

That’s good to know, cheers :+1:

As above but be aware they may not recover your particular SW. You’ll get one recovered from stock, yours will replace that. Therefore it may sit (on the splines) differently on your column.

Phew, I was lucky then. Mine fitted dead straight :+1:

That’s a good point Mick which I hadn’t thought about. Still, at least it wouldn’t be a big job to adjust it back using the track rods I guess?

Why not diy recover your wheel.
Mine is a £20 kit from ali express

Had two from Royal SW, the first was slightly off centre when returned. I then found out they use an in stock wheel to recover, didn’t realise they could all be set (the splines) differently in each wheel.
The second SW from them was already fitted to the car, the last owner may have had an alignment done
afterwards though as it was spot on straight ahead lined up.
Well worth the having the recover done, they do an excellent job.:+1:

I would have a go myself Deano if I just wanted a straight retrim but I want Royal to add the thumb grips and the flat bottom modification.

Got my new wheel from Royal steering wheels fitted and super pleased with it! Went for the flat bottom and added thumb grips plus Grey stitching to match the seats and my new ND gearknob. I can’t recommend Royal highly enough, they’ve done a great job and were really helpful and efficient to deal with. Thanks again to Gordon too for giving me the donor wheel! :+1:

Looks good Steve!

As a note to people thinking of a self-cover with ali-ex or whoever, I had a professional recovered wheel where the cover started to stretch and give even though it was glued to the wheel… Got so loose it was like steering through a jumper sleeve.

Ok… I’m sure you could do a good job yourself, but getting decent non-lumpy, even, straight fit with tight stitching etc is going to be a challenge… Let alone reshaping to get a flat bottom / thumb grips etc… a real challenge !!!

I have no affiliations to Royal, but they do a fantastic job and will give you a call to discuss options etc… a real personal service to give you the exact, most important, contact point you’ll appreciate on EVERY drive !!

‘Couple of hundred quid’ very well spent !!

Totally agree👍
