Mk3 - Raise Seat Height

Hi,

I’ve just brought my first MX5 (Mk3 Roadster Coupe) and loving it so far!  My only problem is the I find the driving position slightly low for my taste and my 2007 model doesn’t have height adjustable seats. And a cushion isn’t a good look in such a nice car!

I’ve had a a search on the forum (and others) and seen that you can raise the seats by using a few spacers, and longer bolts.  However, I’ve only seen instructions for Mk1 and 2 models.  Ideally I’d raise it by about an inch.

Has anyone done this on a Mk3 and does anyone have any advice on how to do safely do this?  I’m new to car modding, if this really counts as a mod…so would appreciate any guidance/advice anyone might have.

Cheers

I had the same problem with my 2007 Sport, My OH does need to raise the seat but I don’t. If you purchase a seat from a 2008 onwards it should have the height adjustable lever, problem solved. I got a seat from a car being race prepared and then sold my existing seat.

Thanks for the reply.  That’s not a bad idea, just a straight swap.  Probably a better solution in the long-run.  I’ll have a look at ebay and some parts websites to see if I can track some down.

In the short term, if anyone else has any experience with the washers/spacers I’d be interested to hear.

Hi Nic,

yes, you can raise a bit the seat, by  spacing the seat from a from the rails on a mk3. What I did previously was to raise the front of the seat a bit to get better thigh support. One inch might be a bit too much and for that you might need some new fasteners. Anyway, here are some pictures of the seat frame and the mod I did.

Hard to see on this pic, but if you look carefully there are 4 fasteners keeping the frame to the black rails:

And the side view from the outside:

The inside pic shows the 2 fasteners:

And here is the view from outside with 3 spacers between the rail and the seat frame (at around 1/3 from the bottom of the pic):

It’s like a 2h job, so if can try this until you find a seat that is height adjustable.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Adrian

Helps a lot, thanks for the pics.  Easy to understand something with visuals.  Sounds like a job for next weekend!
