MK3 Reg plate repositioned

Hi All, I have always been disappointed with the registration plate ruining the front of the car. I would have done this before if I realised how quick and easy it is to carry out!.

I made up two L shape brackets 100mm x 100mm and about 30 mm wide from some spare metal. Where the under tray fits at the front the two fixings can be replaced with bolts to hold the brackets, then remove the reg plate and attach  to the Brackets. I am soon to get a private plate so will look even better as the plate will no be as wide.

Rather than removing the plate holder fixings from behind, I choose to quickly remove it by drilling through plate holder braking the support bosses (luckily there are depressions on the front face indicating the boss positions). As the plate holder is pulled down the three lower fixings can then be cut. Once the plate holder was removed, I pushed the bosses back and they dropped out.

Filled the holes, rubbed down then primed. In the summer I will fine fill and color match.

To get to this stage including making the brackets took about two hours.

I had some filler so the cost was for primer only from the pound shop, mainly because this primer was the closest match to the car.

Have a look at the pic below and let me know what you think?

Cheers

Derek

Sorry not my cup of tea, but if you like it that’s all that matters

Does the bottom of the number plate sit below the bottom of the front spoiler or at the same level? I think I would worry about it catching on low kerbs and speed bumps. As much as I like to see the front grille I actually like the default number plate position. To me, what you have done now makes the car look less sleek and the number plate like it was an afterthought so someone just bolted it on the bottom. Sorry, that’s probably not the sort of feedback you were hoping for but as Sim22 said, if you like it then it doesn’t really matter what anyone else thinks.

“let me know what you think?”

It looks wrong in that position.

I think sticking plates at the bottom of the nosecone has always been a marmite thing, even on the earlier cars. I have always gone for an offset plate holder on my Mk1 cars. On my Mk3 I’m actually not that bothered by the position of the plate - the only change I would make would be if I thought I could get away with a stick-on plate but that’s unlikely on a 2006 car.
