Mk3 uprated clutch and fitting recommendations near Bristol

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2013 Mk3.75 PRHT BBR Stage 1 Turbo
  2. I’m based near: Bristol
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Uprated clutch options and workshop recommendations.

I have a Mk3.75 2013 that has been running a BBR Stage 1 for a couple of years with sub 40k miles on the clock. It also has a BBR mid section and sports cat and a Cobalt back box. I have experienced the start of clutch slip on a few occasions when under load in higher gears and it stops when backing of a little. I think a clutch upgrade is due.

The car is a daily driver so I don’t really want to go full-on creamic paddle clutch. I had one in a previous car a few years ago and it wasn’t the nicest experience. As a compromise, I have seen a couple of dual friction material clutches with organic on the flywheel side and paddles on the pressure plate side. BBR had one on their site a while back and I had a chat with BOFI Racing today about their offering. BOFI also suggested changing to a lightweight flywheel but I’m not sure about the pros and cons.

I’m tempted to go back to BBR and go Stage 2. Alternatively the BOFI kit sounds like a good match for my requirements. If I go down the BOFI route, I need to find someone to fit as my current garage doesn’t have enough space. So any opinions and recommendations please?

I’d suggest you consult “the Google” deeply on this point. You mention it’s a daily driver so a lightened flywheel most likely wouldn’t suit that at all IMHO.
I’ve nothing against Bofi but they will sell you as much as they can.

I’ve had a good Google and there is conflicting info regarding a lightened flywheel. Faster revving and less inertia on upchanges so the revs drop faster wouldn’t be bad, but not if it causes transmission issues and noise. I’m not sure the compromise is worthwhile but was wondering if anyone had experience with this on an NC.
