MK4 2.0L Recommended Gearbox Oil & Diff Oil

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK4 2016 2.0L Sport Nav
  2. I’m based near: Liverpool
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: What is the best gearbox oil & diff oil.

What brands, quantities needed and where to buy.

I’ve had excellent results with Millers CRX 75w/90 NT+ and as the gearbox takes just over 2 litres you’ll need 3 litres and for the differential you’ll need 1 litre of Millers CRX LS 75w/90 NT+ for a .6 litre fill. Ford MTF XT-M5-QS for the gearbox also works well.

Very happy with Motul Gear 300 75/90 in the gearbox. For the diff I only use genuine Mazda Long Life Hypoid SG1. If you decide to use anything else in the diff, please check the lubricant manufacturers website first. Many will not make a recommendation from their range and state words to the effect of “refer to technical for advice”.

I use Millers in both the differential and gearbox but have found the differential to be ~0.7L and the gearbox ~2.2L until they spill.

Hi There
Do you have to change the diff oil when doing the gearbox? Mazda specs say only if its been submerged in water for the service?

Thanks KP

No, you don’t have to. But its highly recommended as both the gearbox and differential run VERY hot. I do all of mine annually (engine, gearbox, differential) as I service the car myself its only the cost of the oil to me.
