Bird hit has smashed the clear plastic at front of headlight assembly. Has anyone been able to replace just the clear plastic front or do I have to go for replacement of the whole assembly (quote £1667 inc VAT)
I cannot find any information on repair of the unit even if the plastic cover were available.
Cheapest option would be a used unit. Nothing obvious in the UK but a few showing in America. Problem with an American supplied unit may be the left hand drive?
If you can find one at a breaker in this country probably around £300.
Looking at the picture of a unit on MX5parts website it would appear that the plastic cover may be screwed or clipped on. While the cover on it’s own may not be available separately your old unit would still be of value to someone with a failed unit with a good cover.
At least they are available from MX-5 parts for around half the price you have been quoted.
Flipping eck! Not only is it the active bonnet you have to worry about it, is the headlights as well. If somebody comes up with a repair system for cracked headlamp covers they would make a fortune.
Had a wonderful drive today, back from Darlington to home via Reeth, Hawes and Ingleton. Had to dodge Seagulls, Rooks and Sheep on many occasions. I should be a bag of nerves
What I find worrying is that with my nearly four year old ND a relatively minor (non-human) collision that breaks a headlight and sets off the active bonnet system could give a possible write-off scenario!
Could be completely wrong, but doesn’t it come under the heading of glass in the insurance policy and therefore a windscreen claim which should not affect your NCB. Failing that, it is impact damage and so a standard insurance claim if you want to go that route.
