Mk4 / ND Gearbox problems

And their reply will be what ? ‘We didn’t sell you the car’ or ’ we aren’t a Mazda dealer , ■■■ are you talking about?  ’ or (if I make the 150mile trip to Wolverhampton to the dealer who sold me the car ) ’ Sorry to hear that sir. But it is a four year old car and we aren’t liable for every fault which might arise '.

And let’s be clear - it isn’t Mazda  with whom the legal buck stops but the seller . Mazda’s only liability began and ended with its (now expired )warranty.

Look , I don’t have a problem with this  being discussed, especially by those unlucky enough to be affected, but let’s not turn a little drama for the few into a crisis for the many .

I agree John, could we stick to reporting and discussing the facts, see my opening post

I would appreciate if this post could remained focused on the current problems with the ND gearbox and not become sidetracked onto other problems with the car or issues with other Mks .

Nail on the head, I think its unfortunately very dependant upon the dealership.  I’m going to be taking mine to a different dealer this time around, the problem I have is I don’t cover very many miles in my car (approx. 2000 miles since March) and the car doesn’t get driven often, therefore the symptoms don’t often show and in the limited time the dealer drives the car they say they can’t find any fault. Whining under acceleration is the most common problem I have and fairly consistent, but difficult to listen for (it can be quite loud at times but others hardly audible) , crunch into second is a lot more occasional but I have had it happen numerous times in the short journeys I make.

2017 rf 2.0 going to take mine in stiff to get into 1st lumpy from 1st to 2nd lumpy from 2nd to 3rd all the rest no problem does get better when you you have driven a few miles lets se  what they say car done 16000

car booked in 2nd wensday to see if they can get to bottom of gear box it takes it a good 30 min of driving before the fist 3 gears go in easily 4.5.6 you can change using your finger 1.2.3. you need your hand to force it in and it get worse the colder it is… as my driving in the week tends to be local its a problem…thought about selling it the shine is going of it fast  my wife 10 year old mini shows it up…and I sold a 2002 mgtf to buy it although not a better car the gear box was miles better …note when I brought it all was OK did a 1500 mile trip no problems so far it as done 16000 mils and getting worse. asked about a part ex and the told me it as lost 5000 pounds in 6 months …altogether it as lost 50% of its value in 18 months wish I new that before I brought it would have stayed with the mg…let’s hope it can be sorted

The more i read about this gearbox issue,im so please i kept my MK3 and ordered the 124 Spider. The main reason wasnt just i liked the look better, but they opted to used the MX5 NC gearbox.Allegedly they doubted the MK4 gearbox capability so i can’t see why Mazda are in denial.

Ho I do wish Mazda would have listened when I raised the issues with the gearbox…we could have been a cheap ‘test dummy’ for them.

ha well…onwards and upwards!

note to members

we are currently buying 2.0 mk4’s all cars considered especially with gearbox issues, please get in touch if you are selling…

all the best

happy motoring for 2019

Hello Paul

Well, I certainly listened to your advice & never bought an intended MK4!!

I am more than pleased with the 2014 2 litre Sport Tech Recaro I bought from you

October 2017.

Maybe in a year or so time I may well be in the market for MK4 with a Rodders uprated gearbox.

I am looking forward to the next Tech Night, no doubt Burton will provide the info in due course.

All the Very Best for 2019

Hi Fellow mx owners

I purchased a new mark 4     2 litre sport in sept 2015,one of very first,i drive it for 24000 miles,no problems at all and a lovely smooth gearbox to use,i have now sold it and await del of new 2019  2 litre sport nav 1st march,i so enjoyed the previous car,do not really no why i sold it as it was pewrfect, the man i sold it to loves it.

But will admit not only did i fancy the various updates, certainly  more powerful engine, but a little bit of me did not want any preoblems with gearbox issues outside warrantry,i felt sure it was not going to give any problems, and i used to drive it quite hard from time to time.

Appt in 2021/22 there should be a mark 5,that i hope to be my next buy,i do not like shopping at all,but like buying a mazda mx5 convertable.

All best happy new year Simon

car in today said it needs a gear box oil change…but they don’t have any oil …Ford mazda main dealers  so need to keep it…at least they know there is a fault…we will see when I get it back with luck it will sort it

Seems like a case of  playing for time to me.   So hopefully they’ll come up with a genuine solution.

Main dealer service have no gear box oil ! What a bunch of arses & they think a change of oil is a fix.I bet when you 1st went in they said “oh we’ve had no issues or  heard of any”

Do what i did when a £1100 electric steering arm/pump went on a C3 Picasso. They Evans Halshark denied there was known problem.Slapped s load of internet bumph on the desk with proof of others being fixed by Citreon.

Took the car in immediately with no cost to me.Had i not pushed it they would of tried to push me for £1100 plus about £300 in labour.

If you get any ■■■■, park your motor outside the dealer as tell everyone that looks at a 5 to go buy a 124 lol.

Still no oil not sure when it will arrive mazda sent a email to dealers saying there is a back log … Mazda dealers OK at the moment not trued to say there was no issue… But you have to let them try before I take it to the next stage … You never know it might work

UPDATE… MAZDA REDDITCH HAVE HAD MY CAR FOR3 DAYS …TODAY I PHONED THEM FOR A UPDATE…I was told they got the oil from mazda but on checking mazda tec dept told them not to put the oil in as it was not fro the RF they then told me it was a characteristic of the the car when it was cold the gears would be sticky and because I brought it in June ( summer ) it would not be noticed   so I said it was only a summer car and not for winter use as if like me you worked local the your car gear box would never get warm …and I explained I did not buy a car with characteristic…phoned mazda UK they told me it should have been reported to them but there is no record so they are contacting redditch then will get back in touch with me

Seems that my post #151 was pretty accurate - unfortunately!

I think the two things we can all agree on here is that your dealer is talking rubbish and lying. Different oil dependent on soft top or RF?

In the early reviews of the ND there were plenty of plaudits for the slick gear change. I have a 2015 ND with 14k on the clock. I can leave it standing for over a fortnight at this time of year and the gearbox is slick and smooth right from the off. My previous NC had a slightly stiff gearbox when cold, virtually all of them did. I’ve never noticed anything like that with the ND.

Yes there have been well documented problems with the ND gearbox. Doesn’t appear to be as rugged as the NC but when it is working well it’s superb. Obviously yours isn’t so don’t take any sh*t from your dealer.

I don’t use my closest Mazda dealer. They have a very poor reputation and I have personally been treated abysmally by them. I use a dealer slightly further away who I and many others who I have spoken to trust implicitly. Plus it’s a nice cross country run to get there. If the car is under warranty you can use whichever Mazda dealer you wish. Might be time to move on. Never argue with an idiot, they will only drag you down to their level.

Paul, You will have services quite a few MK4’s by now, which oil do you put into the gearbox? do you use the same oil in the race cars?

Ok, so my car went into the dealer because of gearbox issues for the 3rd time yesterday.

I took the technician out in the car with me driving, putting the gearbox into third, letting the revs drop off then accelerating lead to a consistent whine from the gearbox under acceleration (I repeated this several times).  The whining could also be heard from 2nd gear through to 3rd all the way through the rev range before stopping when shifting to 4th, again this behaviour was demonstrated several times.  The technician this time could hear the whining noise and was in agreement with me, the car was returned to the dealership where they carried out diagnostic work and confirmed the gearbox should be replaced.  Overnight they seeked approval from Mazda and now Mazda have advised they will not approve replacing the gearbox unless it completely fails.

Unbelievable.

And quite disgraceful!!!

Mazda claim the symptom is not listed in the TSB I presented to them, even though the document states in bold (and I quote word for word): “Subject: Unusual Noise from Manual Transmission when driving in 2nd and/or 3rd Gear”, the TSB then goes on to state the gearbox should be replaced.

Is this Mazda now rejecting all claims unless the gearbox has failed within warranty?
