Speaking to Customer Services directly, it turns out the dealer was actually lying to me and customer services advised that the dealer had never made a request for a replacement gearbox. I’m continuing to press this matter with both the dealer and customer services, but their behaviour has been quite appalling.
Brakes are nothing to do with it, I don’t think Customer Services are even aware of them, I have raised this whining issue with the car since March 2018, the brakes weren’t fitted until later in the year last year.
Tread carefully, Bill a member of P&P had his claim for a whining gearbox initially rejected as he had modified the brakes, this was his email to me in Feb 18
Yes, the gearbox. Paul Roddison said to check it out. Burrows in Sheffield were not helpful, didnt want to know. Perrys at chesterfield much better customer service. Full investigation, no problem found.
Other work on the car - sports exhaust from Cobra in sheffield. Tein Monosport suspension all round (just a little bit lower now, but not silly) Willwood calipers and discs at the front. Modest remap, probably +10bhp or so. Warranty? Probably invalidated!
If you have any contact details or if he is a member of this forum please let me know, I would be very interested to talk to him about the gearbox replacement. As things stand, the dealer has accepted there is a problem with my car but is seemingly dragging their feet, lying and now starting to ignore me, they’ll only get away with that so long but it could be if I can reference similar cases this will help me out.
Customer services requested the dealer take out 2 other MX-5s to see if they make the same sound (bearing in mind the service manager and technician were already in agreement there was an issue with my car, a point they may now well deny). The service manager / technician are now claiming two 68 plate MX-5s make the same noise, I’ve requested they demonstrate that to me but at the moment they are refusing to do so until customer services have added their response to that claim.
I can’t see this ending well, in which case I will be contacting the Motor Ombudsman, seeking legal advice, making an official complaint about the lies from the service manager and some other things if need be.
Gareth they really are giving you the run-around! What a disgraceful performance by Mazda and the dealership! As well as the measures you’ve mentioned have you considered contacting the motoring press? They may take up the story as there are other cases with similar problems! Good luck whatever you do!
Mazda Pentraeth (Anglesey) are now denying ever having agreed there was an issue with my car and ever advising they were seeking approval for a gearbox replacement. When I spoke with them and asked them to listen to the recording of the service manager calling me to advise Mazda won’t replace the gearbox unless it completely fails, they have refused to do so. If you want terrible customer service, damage done to your car and to deal with a complete bunch of liars, Mazda Pentraeth is for you.
I am now having to take my car to a third dealership to meet a Mazda ‘field engineer’ that Mazda Customer services are sending out, who will no doubt refuse to acknowledge there is a fault with the car. I will be asking for them to demonstrate another MX-5 making the same noise to me.
If I was to offer a WARRANTY to cover your gearbox from year 3-6 so a 3 year warranty, this would be subject to us servicing your car so we know that the oils have been changed etc what would you be willing to pay???
Same as Countryboy I would probably take you up, I’m too far away too. Currently paying £190 per year (year 4) to one of the bigger aftermarket warranty companies for the basic policy that includes drivetrain cover.
Sounds like a good deal Paul. Unfortunately I have put a deposit down on a new ND2. One of my justifications was the issue with the gearbox (even though mine has been perfect), the others are the increased power and colour, Eternal blue which is a lovely colour. I will wish to have the suspension lowered and geometry set on the new car and I will PM you about this.
After the crap I’ve had over the last couple of months with dealers there is NO WAY mine is going back for servicing, £250 seems reasonable to me and I’d just make the 100 mile trip over for servicing. I guess if the gearbox was to go it would be a bit of a mission to get the car over to you but not impossible.
I’ve got one more chance of getting a replacement box out of Mazda but I fully expect them to behave as diabolically as they have on the previous two attempts.
I was told the same go out and find other mx5 try them against mine to see if they were the same both the dealer Redditch and mazda are ignoring me …may be some better than me can get a list up of all the people with issues about the gear box and the lack of support from mazda summit the report to auto express see if they can take it up …mazda were not interested in talking to me just said if not happy contact ombudsman…and offered there number…why would they do that when they have not tryed to resolve the problem…
