Mk4 - why no front foglights?

Mk4 - why no front foglights?

Do the LED headlights mean that front foglights are not needed?

This is the first car I’ve bought in decades that doesn’t have them as standard.

What’s the official line?

John.

Due to beam pattern of LED headlights, you wont need Fog Lights…They are generally being ditched by many manufacturers that fit these lights

But the Fiat 124 (MX-5 clone) seems to have them fitted - see . . .

Odd.

Maybe that’s why it’s so pug ugly, because it’s got unnecessary light clusters to spoil the lines.  They seem reminiscent of the lights on a “5” MK.3, i.e. one model design backwards! They were necessary and looked fine on the NC, but on the Fiat, just overkill as it seems to have an LED headlight system.

Eh?

Havent you just written a contradiction?

A backwards design on a5 Mk3…but looked fine on a NC?

Sorry Chris, that is not what I meant.  I meant that the fog lights looked fine on the MK.3, and it needed them.  The Fiat 124 is a Mk.4 derivative/alternative, but it is showing design factors, and unnecessary ones at that, a la Mk.3, one design backwards.  Does that make sense?

Yes. Thanks… makes sense

Having said that…I like the Fiat…it retains some originality with a modern twist

Think you mean it’s some sort of design students’ hopeless pastiche of a fairly mediocre middle of the road old car. Much better off with a late original 124, if you can handle the bodywork and mechanical failure. Old or new neither makes any sense.

These days with projector headlights, fog lights are just a waste of time. Aside from the chavs around Maccy Ds they are completely unnecessary. Most I see using them still have dipped headlights on which defeats the purpose of foglights anyway.

Its more than based on a Mazda it shares the chassis and many many parts…and that badge snobbery doesnt help with its image either …In fact is decidedly Dickensian Iain

But…as this is Foglight thread and not a Fiat thread…Ill leave it there

Not at all

They could have done such a better job with the 124 they only needed to put a stunning body on to the amazing platform and it is a great shame that they didn’t, the issues here are cosmetic, the styling cues are so overt in trying to reflect the older cars Heritage, as to be basic - the fact that it came from Italy is baffling ( in small 2 seater drop top terms) as it could have been beautiful and I hope that somewhere down the line they tweak it to be, to put Mazda on their toes and keep them focused on getting the most out of the MX-5.

Reference the older vehicle, 124 was middle of the road, neither Alfa nor MG and just a little bland to drive, its no beauty either, but much better than the new car and when done right the 124 looked wonderful. But now the costs and practicality of trying to keep one on the road are beyond their worth and you are going to end up with a US LHD import with only more issues.

So if I want the driving, the handling, better of the looks and not the costs, I’ll stick with the MX old or new - because its not clear where this 124 is meant to be.

On Topic - Fog lights - having driven a mk4 in pea soup the LED low level running light gear, did a decent job of keeping left and right lit up, probably just as good as independent fogs, but the headlights in general are excellent for cutting through the muck.
