Mobilube 1 SHC 75W90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil Smell

Hi all

I’ve just changed the gearbox oil on my 2009 NC 1.8. I’ve used the Mobil as in the post subject line. It had a very odd and pretty unpleasant smell. Has anyone else noticed this? I bought the oil on Ebay and it was in sealed containers and they all had the same smell.

^^^ Gear oil never smells very good new and especially old (used) oil.

Not being a connoisseur, I can’t speak for the bouquet of that particular bottling, but gear oil is known for smelling bad, sulphur I think.

Thanks for the fast replies and reassurance guys. I’ll go ahead and change the differential oil now.

Cheers.

It is a GL5 oil which means it has an additive in it to cover the high surface pressure of a bevel gear system basically a differential.

As has been said above that means it has a sulphate added for this purpose which gives a not very nice smell, most GL4 gear oils smell a bit better.

It can also be used in Mazda gearboxes but most owners of cars with a six speed box have found that Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W/90 or Redline MT90 performs better with regard to gear changing at low temperatures.

Mine is a 5 speed. Not sure if that makes a difference. Had a quick drive in it and gearbox seems ok. Time will tell.

Thanks for the info’ though.

Sounds good just enjoy the car!
