Modified car - insurance issues

Hi. I’m getting the Stage 2 BBR package done including suspension and exhaust so I spent Friday ringing different insurers to 1) see if they would insure me and if so, 2) how much for. I was with esure, who dropped me like a hot coal as soon as they knew I was having modifications. Directline similarly. Anyway, Footman James wanted almost a grand , and that was for 8k limit on usage! Finally, i settled with GreenLight, who agreed to insure me for about £300 less than FJ. My annual mileage is limited to 7,500 but that’s still a real bargain! I’d thoroughly recommend that you ask them for a quote if you’ve modified  your car.

I was with GL but like most they upped the price too much for me to want to stay.

My sources are limited (age related) but I found Admiral the best option, as they allow up to six modifications with no argument. They also don’t quibble about my age (84) Possibly a tad more than the few available options, but most won’t allow any modifications at all. However, I have no power mods, but don’t really need any.

They said to me that if I have no claims and my NCB goes from two to three years, I can expect a lower premium next year. They said that they like to keep hold of their existing customers and that they have an 85% retention rate. We will see!!

I put all of my eggs in one basket and went with Admiral this time. They cover modified cars and of course your average daily non modified car. Greenlight only do modified cars and put my cover up by nearly 20%.

Admiral also gave me an unbeatable quote on home cover, infact that alone saved me £90, so basically 2 cars and home cover for around £450.

I move to whoever gives me a better or similar deal for the money, if the current insurers don’t come up with anything decent 12 months on they get ditched.

A plan for me + otherhalf , all mods covered , up to 185 BHP , 5k p/a…no NCD ( all on daily driver ) . = £220

Blimey that’s good. It all depends on how extreme the mods are, age NCB status, license points, home address etc. All I know is that their quote was way better than any other I had, so that’ll do me for this year, thank you! ???

I’m with Aplan, 5000 miles, £340 fully comp for my 2011 BBR stage 2 turbo valued at £14000

Brill! How much NCB? No claims in the last five years I assume? Great value. Will look at them next time.

If you have a good ncb on your main car they give a very generous initial discount. I’m currently on 2 years ncb with this policy now.

Excellent.

Worth reading this thread for Admiral and APLan’s names to crop up. I’ve just come off the phone to Footman James they wanted £700.87 for std Mk 3.5 2.0L, 7,000 miles pa before that I’d got a quote of £296.80 like for like from Lancaster but my current insurer yet to send renew quote but this year is at £189.87, that with LV. Both latter two would not charge more for minor mods, eg bigger anti roll bars. I’m happy with LV but Admiral and APlan deserve calling based on above comments. Re. Footman there are such huge variances in premiums I’ve seen from members in other threads - maybe it depends if there’s an ‘R’ in the month when you get a good quote, I certainly can’t see why our ‘Club’ seems to be enthusiastic about them.

Admiral the only insurer that asks  if you have been on a speed awareness course and punish you if you have.

No thanks.

I think it’s a bit poor that the OC promotes links to firms like Footman James when they do very rarely provide the best value. There should be a guide for members to help signpost us to the cheapest providers rather than the ones which advertise in STHT. It’s particularly bad if you’ve done modifications as the pool of firms willing to entertain you as a customer is very small.

There’s a big difference between “classic” insurance and normal limited mileage second car insurance in my experience. It would have cost me three times as much to insure a 10 year old Mk3 than a 25 year old mk1 of similar power and value. Another reason to buy a mk1!

Just to add to this I was with Adrian Flux and the renewal for my Supercharged MK2 was coming in at £455 for third party. After a bit of phoning around I’ve gone with A-Plan at £350 for fully comp which includes protected no-claims. They were very good on the phone and made the whole process pretty quick . +1 from me!

Yesterday took out Fully Comp, 7,000 miles pa cover with Saga on Mk 3.5 2009 2.0L Sport Tech which included one modification - beefier anti roll bars. Cost £167 pa including European cover. My renewal with LV was £187. I’d have thought both are excellent quotes but then I’m 69, clean license (now) and live in a relatively low risk area. I did contact A-PLan but before their call back I’d sorted cover. Compare above value with Lancaster £296.80 and ‘F’ James £700.87 ouch.

Its revenue they couldnt give a monkeys if its cheaper for members or not .
