Mohair roof advantages?

Are their any advantages to having a mohair roof instead of a vinyl?
Cheers…

They look really lovely…,

when they’re clean…,

and new.

They look better but so does vinyl if kept clean and treated.
Had both on a Mk2 and Mk1 with just vinyl. The Mk2 had a completely waterproof vinyl hood but had had previous problems with leaks and had left stains on the inside, it was a bit mingy but dry. Opportunity came on a SH mohair hood and so glad I bought it.
My Mk1 had vinyl hood with the plastic window, perfect really and a nice fit. Easy clean, I just washed it along with the car body then treated it to a wipe over with some vinyl treatment from Autoglym. A bit more involved with a mohair hood as in maintenance but I still wipe it over with a soaking microfibre cloth with a little gentle soap mixture.

I had 5xMk1 and 2xMk2 when I used to fit hoods and I had a Mohair once.

All my cars had Vinyl after.

Mohair,

  • looks great when clean
  • Tends not to shrink (can stretch)
  • More difficult to clean
  • Gets wear marks as the hood bounces if you don’t use the hood cover when it’s down

Vinyl

  • Looks great when clean
  • Easy to clean
  • Doesn’t show wear marks
  • Can shrink if left down (needs to left up if stored)

As already stated above, mohair looks great when it is clean and new - but - try getting bird muck off it?!!!
Vinyl is much easier to keep clean!

Thanks guys.
My vinyl hood is in great condition so I’ll keep that…

I bought a stiff bristle brush from Amazon made for mohair soft tops so after the car wash, it gets a brush (with the direction of the weave) and it comes up looking like new. £6.50
