Which would folk prefer?
An 1100 mile NA or an 1100 mile ND if they were the same price?

NAā€™s ā€œCarcoonā€ Museum value will drop like a piano down a lift shaft if it got used ā€œproperlyā€.
Stick 10k miles on it over 4 yearsā€¦knock 10K of itā€™s ( silly 23K) asking price.
Itā€™s value lies soley on condition and where itā€™s never been or done.
Not to mention the usual dried out washers and gaskets and heart failures if the paint gets a chip or two.
ND is usableā€¦probably less depreciation. There is no answer really to where one wins out. One mostly is for looking at, the other is for driving.

Got an ND already. I saw a decent one of these recently, 36,000 miles, fsh, all docs, and no tin worm, for Ā£7000. Almost bought it. Now Iā€™ve seen this, wish I had.

Interesting reading the history of the car. It was placed in a collection by KGF or on behalf of the owner (not clear) itā€™s being sold now to make room for more fast Fords.
The classic fast Fords are definitely fetching whopping prices nowadays.

If you put 10,000 miles on in a week, maybe Ā£10k would be knocked off, because 15k Mk1 MX5s do sell for about Ā£13-15k right now. But Mk1s are appreciating ; Hagerty a couple of years ago put a 8% CAGR on annual price rises for cars in the UK. In the US, they have seen prices for late NA rise by 130% in the past 5 years.

The UK is the market that seems to least appreciate the Mk1 MX5; NAs are cheaper here than most other major markets. Iā€™d expect international values to somewhat equalise.

KGF have a track (I think thats conservative, looking how much the entry price of a Mk1 has changed) in values, plus or minus 2%, in 5 years, that Ā£23k MX5 (which isnā€™t the highest value Iā€™ve seen for a Mk1) will turn into Ā£44k, if put away in a garage unused, and assuming annual maintenance.

Now if it the case that a Ā£23,000 MX5, assuming no appreciation, is worth Ā£13,000 after 10k miles and 5 years, that works out, conveniently, at 12% depreciation each year, So if Mk1s are rising by 12% a year, a Ā£23k MX5 thats used quite a bit will be worth in 5 years timeā€¦Ā£23k.

The same wonā€™t be true for the second had ex-demo ND MX5. 5 year old base spec NDs seems to be worth Ā£12-14k.

It might be moot after 2030. Iā€™m not sure what direction the classic car market will take then. Petrol will still be availabl for many many years (and there will be replacements) but it will get more expensive (despite declining demand, RBOB gasoline futures are putting a price of $2.672/gal by December 2023, rising to $4.770 (2023 USD) by January 2028) and probably harder to find as filling stations reduce the number of pumps (there has been a long term decline in filling stations in the UK that long predates electrification). I can see some cars take a nose dive in values, mainly at the cheaper end, as it simply wonā€™t be worth the effort to fuel up these cars, or install a home fuel tank (more people will be applying for the petroleum licence to store upto 275 liters of petrol at home). Quite possibly all MX5 values will fall off a cliff.

Irrelevant to all of us of course, as havenā€™t we all taken a pledge to be buried in our MX5s?

That poor Berkeley is destined never to be used, I fear. What a waste!
It went through an auction in Scotland about five years ago from memory, and sold for about Ā£14,500 I think (and at the time I thought that was expensive - it was double the auctioneers estimate!!!) and since then it has been advertised for sale a couple more times for around Ā£19,000, although I am not sure if it ever actually sold at that price.
I guess if it does sell for the eye watering amount it has been advertised for, it will just go and sit in another collection for the rest of its days. Sad really.
My first MX5 was a Berkeley, and I loved it - I owned it for eight years and drove it every day. Sold it just before it reached 100,000 miles, and the last I heard it was still going strong and has now clocked up over 150,000!!!

Itā€™s a speculative auction chess piece / profit gouger that oneā€¦knew Iā€™d seen it before.
Itā€™s simply not useableā€¦unless you are loaded and do not care much.

Thought Iā€™d seen it before too, I posted the same ad May 21, theyā€™ve just revived that and posted.

KGFfirst sold this car in 2021. The asking price. May 2021, then was Ā£21,795

By September that year, it was sold.

Curious about the slight increase in asking price. How did they come up with this, besides just wanting to show that its worth more now than 2 years ago.

Is KGF selling this on behalf of the collector?
Thats a gain of 2.75% per year.

Or did he take a hit from KGF?

I would be wary of even firing it up. Goodness knows what state the seals and hoses are in, or if the fuel or oil have turned to gum.
