Hi my 05 plate Mazda Mx5 NC went for an MOT the other day and failed. Ive attached the picture of the mot, how easy olare these to replace and is this even a fail? Thanks
Looks like you will be wanting a full set of new tyres, the headlamp lenses probably want a good TCut as I’m guessing they are cloudy.
As for the Majors you can but replacement covers but as putting them on practically requires you to strip down nearly as much as if you were replacing the ball joint I would probably just replace the ball joint with new. Obviously that depends on your budget and how long the cover was perished for as in my opinion if you’ve been driving it with the cover split them dirt has most likely got inside the ball joint and so it will wear out sooner.
You get 10 days for a free retest at KwikFit so if you get the covers sorted and headlights polished up then you should be fine and then budget for some new tyres this year (Worth checking the dot code and seeing how old your current ones are)
Without pictures I can’t really say much more than that as bolts can sometimes come off easy or be a right pig to do. Looks like your Easter weekend is sorted with a project. Good Luck!
Best to replace the ball joint waste of time fitting new covers. T cut the head light lens. Tyres have a look on here, https://www.asdatyres.co.uk/
Ball joint covers from Mazda a couple here
If the ball joints were bad they would have failed on those
bit of an old cynic here but on many vehicles a ball joint rubber could be a quick earner (or suddenly become a complete joint or an arm with a joint fixed to it) as could be a head light de frosting! I wouldn’t be surprised if they said they could do the tyres for you!

The rear ball joints are integral with the links, and there are 4 each side. As a full set of links would be about five hundred quid for parts, it is worth replacing just the boots. See if the MoT station will tell you which one failed to avoid confusion.
Thanks for your replies. If I’m replacing the cover then by the sounds of it iay aswell replace the joint. If i was to do the fromt ones at kwik fit, they said the failed one would be £285 and they’d replace the cover. The rears I’d have to go to a mazda specialist they said.
Sounds like a major issue to me unfortunately id may take me a while to get the jobs done due to funds.
Thanks
The rear suspension arms ball joint covers are available as a compete kit only. I have had most of mine replaced on the last 2 MOT’s. Also I understand that the covers are not totally interchangeable i.e different ones for different joints (mostly). I still have 2 left to take along to my next MOT for use if required. Again I understand that aftermarket covers are not available and the independent garage ordered them directly from Mazda. I think at the time it worked out about £10 per cover so about £80. But that was about 18 months ago. Paul. PS my car is an NC2 2009 Sport model.
