Just had a fairly crappy visit to my local MOT test centre. Discovered on my return to collect the car that it had failed due to a problem with the steering. The garage was less than helpful and couldn’t really explain the problem so I took the option of driving the car away although they recommended otherwise. Got it back home with no problems and it is now with my local friendly mechanic who will take a proper look at it tomorrow. The certificate mentioned something to do with fractures and when the car is still, there is some movement of the steering wheel back and forth. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? It’s a 95 V-Spec with a Nardi steering wheel, standard suspension and 16" alloys. TIA.
During the MOT the steering is rocked from side to side to check the free play if any in the steering ball joints/steering rack and to check the mounting of the steering rack to the body, could the cracks be on the chassis/body were the racks is fitted to the body, or were the steering column is held to the body. Does your car have PS is so the engine should be running when this check is carried out.By back and froth do you mean you can pull the steering wheel back towards you,if so (I am unsure about this one) you may have a knackered steering universal joint on the steering colunm, but i am sure if I am wrong some will give you the correct advise, any way best of luck with investigation and repair.
Cheers Alan
Thanks for the replies gents. I’ve already dropped the car in at a local mechanic so I guess the appeal situation might not apply but will keep that in mind in future. I was mainly annoyed last night due to them giving me the excuse that as the MOT tester had gone home for the day noone could explain what the issue was despite the fact that the garage was full of mechanics. Most unhelpful. I’m going to call the man with the car at lunch today to find out what is or isn’t worng. Fingers crossed it’s nothing too serious. The movement is back and forth towards you as you sit in the drivers seat.
Just spoken to my mechanic friend and it seems that it was merely some loose bolts behind the steering wheel. Glad I went that route as the testing garage made it seem like something was completely knackered…
Back to the garage for a restest this afternoon!
