MOT question - wing mirror?

Hi folks,

Got my MOT coming up this Saturday, so what do I go and do…? Knock my flippin wing mirror off! Can’t believe it… anyway…

The inner cylinder has snapped in half. It looks like a cleanish break so I’m thinking I could glue it back on… bit of Araldite??

Obviously I’ve not left the wing mirror dangling by the wire, it’s currently gaffa-taped on… genuine mazda of course…! It’s the passenger side btw.

So, what exactly do they check in an MOT with regards to the wing mirrors??

Thanks

IIRC the MOT requires 2 mirrors, one to be on the drivers side, the other either in the middle or pass side, so you should be okay.

Thanks Alan. Huge relief! I spoke to Mazda earlier, they were charging in the region of £200 for a new one…!

I am not so sure.  A quick Goolgle using “wing mirror MOT” brought up confusing replies.  Some say YES, some say NO.

But found this on http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_810.htm

Obligatory mirrors are
a. an exterior mirror fitted to the offside (right-hand side when seated in the
drivers seat), or

b, an exterior mirror fitted to the
nearside fleft hand side when seated In the drivers seat), or

c. an interior mirror.

To me it seems to be saying that you can have one or the other!

Best thing to do is ring the place where you are having the MOT done and ask them.  After all it will be they who decide if you pass or not.

I got my car MOT’d last week with no glass in my NS door mirror.

You need the drivers side and one other. If the broken mirror has left a sharp edge that be be a problem though.

The “or” in the obligitory mirror text above needs to be read in conjunction with another section of the manual.

"Passenger vehicles with more than 7 passenger seats of any age, and all passenger vehicles first used on or after I August 1978 (not being a minibus as above), must have two mirrors, one of which must be option 'a'."

is that the same with side car mirror? I really need to replace mine with the one that has a light in it. Any idea?

It’s quite simple. You MUST have a usable offside wing/door mirror. Plus you MUST have at least one more usable mirror, either in the centre or on the nearside.

If it has broken or missing glass, it will not count as usable.
