MX-5 Mark 3 - Best Extra Security?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Mark 3 Sports Tech
  2. I’m based near: Pontefract
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Steering Security

New member - pick car up tomorrow - what is the best Steering Lock or Pedal Lock - realise you will not stop a professional theiif but any help appreciated

Welcome to the forum.
The best protection is a garage. Failing that a good alarm, which your car might already have?
Steering wheel locks have one big down fall and it doesn’t matter how good they are. I will not tell what that is on our forum just in case someone reads it and has bad intentions.

Thank you - yes it has an alarm but will be parked in the drive - looking for storage December to March

Welcome…

You have no doubt read this, but others may find it interesting.

On one of the reviews it says :
"Mike removed the lock from our steering wheel using basic tools faster than we could with the key. "
And it wasn’t the worst on test, so buyer beware…

I tend to agree any deterrent is better than nothing, but if someone wants your car, they will have it. So it depends what you are defending against, the casual thief taking an easy car as it is cheaper than the bus fare, or the professional who will strip for parts or ship abroad. Not sure an old MX5 is really the target of either sort, with the ease of access with a sharp knife the only advantage for the opportunist.

If the car has to be left in a bad area, a motorcyle style lock and chain through the wheel and round the pedals might be an effective deterrent, but personally, I just pay my insurance and hope for the best.

I’ve been using the original Stoplock Pro on the NC. It fits OK because the horn press is quite flush, most of the bad reviews for that one need the later Elite in these latest reviews to fit their car. My review on Amazon was back in 2016, and the last photo in see all photos.

Depends what you want to achieve. Do you want to stop someone driving it away or breaking in? If you just want to prevent drive away then look at methods of preventing the car being started like disconnecting the battery starter circuit or a secret switch to disable the fuel pump.

As has been said, if someone is determined they will get your car. Its more about deterring opportunistic theft, I just use one of these for the visual detterent (click pic for ebay page)

Of all the above suggestions, the only one even worth considering is the Disklok. (The Auto Express article admits that they fitted the wrong size to their test vehicle). You also need to be sensible (be careful where you park, don’t leave valuables on show, etc).

Any bar which goes through the steering wheel can be defeated by simply cutting through the steering wheel (a junior hacksaw will probably do it).

The easy availability of cordless angle grinders means that big hefty chains are no longer the deterrent that they used to be. And a can of pipe freezing spray and a hammer will take core of most locks.

A car alarm might be useful if you can hear it yourself - everybody else will just ignore it.

A garage is great when you’re at home, but you can’t really take it with you if you actually want to go anywhere in your MX-5 (rather than just gaze lovingly at it while it’s parked there).

(And before anybody tries to take me to task for posting any of this, I promise you that the local scrotes will be very well aware of all of these techniques - and a lot more besides.)

Maybe it’s a case that if a person decides to tamper with, or take a car which don’t belong to them (being careful not to define the person as a vandal or thief, as that might ‘upset’ the person), it’s not really the person’s fault as it may be that he or she was temporarily struggling with mental health issues and actual is the ‘victim’, not the person whose car he/or she tampered with?

I have to say, this idea of a hidden switch is easily the one which gets my vote. If you’re slightly clever, you could even fit it under fabric or something, so that it’s even less discoverable by the cheeky chappy trying to make off with your pride and joy.

Chris Fix’s video on this is about as helpful as you could possibly want.

lol it’s the PC world we live in :grinning:

Having had a friend who lost his keys when a long way from home, I can assure you that a disklok is all but impossible to remove…
