Hello all, I’ve been lurking here for a week or so while I was waiting to pickup my MX-5, taking in all the info and getting myself ready for the big day! I picked up the car on Thursday, it’s a lovely 2002 Phoenix and I’m very happy with it indeed! However as most of you will be aware the wheels are not great on these cars and mine are blistering so will need replacing. Being the Phoenix it has the Enkei wheels fitted and I have noticed that they are very light indeed, after reading on this site I have gleaned two “golden rules” as follows…
The wheels on the MX-5’s tend to be lightweight and I would be best to replace the wheels with some similar lightweight wheels so not to bugger up the handling.
The recommended size of the wheels are 15" to allow a comfy ride and avoid tramlining etc…
Now I really had my heart set on 16" OZ Superturismo GT’s as I love the look of them on any car, but I can’t seem to locate the info on how much my Enkei wheels actually weight so I can see if the Oz’s will be suitable. I know that a lot of people will suggest going for Rota’s and thats fair enough as they seem to be well suited to the MX-5 but I just can’t see a set of those wheel that I love the look of. I definitely don’t want a big set of heavy boots on the car so I will go the Rota route if needs be.
So… can anyone point me to a site that has the Enkei wheels info on them, or if someone here had these wheels previously on a Phoenix and upgraded, what did you upgrade to? Thanks for reading and here are a few pics…
in my opinion they are the best looking wheels on MX5 with Mazda logo on, but seems like it only applies to MK1 I have exactly the same one but in white (martin here has one as well), I love them they are just beautiful
I am sure if you put them for sale they will be sold rather quickly, and will sell for good price (White one just sold on MX5nutz for £150 which they could be sold for more than that!) OZ superturismo is good but will silver wheels work well with silver car? I am not very sure[:)]
But it is up to you, you may have a different taste of colour from me
The Enkeis are a good light weight wheel and are a damned sight easier to keep clean than Superturismos. Unless you hate the style/design of these wheels, why not have them refurbed instead of buying new ones? They would look great finished in a dark colour such as gunmetal or anthracite.
Similar wheels were fitted to the MR2 Mk3 and Toyota suffered many warranty claims due to corrosion/blistering. A proper refurb including bead blasting and a careful application of powdercoat or 2K paint should keep them in good order for a long time.
To be honest in the six months I’ve had the car they have grown on me, also I have read up on what a good wheel they are. So I think the money will go on some nice P5 Sportdrives and maybe a refurb as you suggest.
Funny how you get the bug, car looks very different now…and still got skirts to fit
Yep another Phoenix owner here, just changed my wheels, only went for 15s (Wheels were a good price and tyres were a seal, so rude not too) still looks rather good on the car, did the double din thing too with a Clarion set with DVD, Nav and Bluetooth, bought on E Bay, some smashing looking Cars you have their…gave me some good ideas, did a wood kit inside and few LED,s dont look good in the pic, but are good in the car foot wells, doing some more chrome on the dial clocks this week and “Flocking” the cover…Twin pipe rear box on order Had mine almost 5 Years and still love it…
Just passing through and I must say that your Phoenix looks lovely!

I own one myself and I removed the registration plinth and now have the plate attached directly to the front bumper but I do like the sprayed on idea really looks good. I’m hoping to fit my fog lights this weekend, cant wait!

It’s nice to see people really making the best of there 5’s, in my opinion the phoenix is one of the best!
