MX 5 prices

I’d say it’s very difficult valuing a car with modifications, because mods are a personal thing - And different people like different mods… It’s a narrower market-place in my opinion…

Rob

Depends on the mods really.

My rule of thumb is that most mods devalue the car by about the cost of those mods.

So, for example, a car that is worth £10k bog standard, but which has had £1k of mods fitted, would be valued at around £9k.

I think that depends on the car, eg a badly improved Corsa. On most sports cars I have owned (M3, GT-R) the opposite was the case.

I have a 100th Anniversary BBR Super 220 MX-5, registered in October 2020 and has less than 1500 miles on the clock.

It has the following spec:
BBR 2019 spec bespoke high-performance camshafts, valve springs and retainers
BBR 4 into 1 high flow, tuned length stainless steel exhaust manifold
BBR Cold Air Intake System
BBR K&N high flow air filter
BBR Custom StarChip ECU remap
BBR Centre section
BBR performance springs
Eibach anti roll bars
Wilwood Front 6 Piston Caliper upgrade (rears painted to match)
Full led lights conversion, including MX5 things sequential rear indicators and red led strip
Full mazdaspeed bodykit
Tinted rear window, 80%
Lathewerks Titanium Sphere
Guardian Designs Corsa 330 wheel (on order / in transit)
Full 5 year ceramic protection

Standard cars are going for £32k, do I have the first £40k MX5, my first cost £500.

The BBR 200 kit is almost £2700, anyone who knows about tuning will value that, it must add £1000+ to the value of the car to the right person. People who are after a bog standard car are not the right buyer but it’s a sports car so some of the buyers will really value your mods. Finding that buyer will take longer I believe.

Seems like the mods are of a very high quality and obviously quite a bit of money has gone in to it. Other option is to revert it back to standard and make your money on the parts as they will get snapped up quickly.

I don’t agree with the post above that each mod devalues the car, different people are after different things and If I could have found a turbo mx5 before I bought my NC, heavily modded and paid a premium, I would have. If I could have found a NC with the bbr kit and paid an extra £1000/£1500 I would have.

Thanks for the kind words Sunzofffski, great minds think alike

Total spend at BBR is more like £7k and the mazdaspeed bodykit was £1500 so no expense spared. I couldn’t contemplate breaking the car, if it goes it will be to a good home.

Agree with both sides of the discussion. Mods done by some bloke in a shed will probably lower the value of the car. Mods done by BBR as one of the most revered MX-5 tuners anywhere are going to make it more desirable to the right person.

Can I ask where you stand with your Mazda warranty should something go bang with the engine, god forbid ?
Having only bought new cars for the last 20 years I always wanted to modify them but even approved suppliers to BMW, Audi and Mercedes had to provide their own warranty.
Now I have my ‘65 plate there are no such worries so I am just weighing up my options for when my current 1 year used Mazda warranty expires.
Just the insurance game to play after that.
Which could be another factor impacting on modified value ? Perhaps ?

We all know the Mazda warranty will be void if it goes “Bang”. But if all modifications are done properly and within tolerances then does it really matter? Also if we think it’s a good choice, then just do it perhaps. :man_shrugging:
Based on a fair amount of reading and knowledge the Mazda engines are pretty bulletproof if serviced correctly of course.
Just my opinion as I modified my NC and have had no issues whatsoever. (Fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:). :+1::slightly_smiling_face:

I have never heard of an issue with bbr gti, their reputation has built up over decades. My engine is probably in better shape now than when it left the factory!

There are specialist insurers, who know that drivers who invest thousands in a car are lower risk as they take more care of their toys.

Interesting… In what way would you think your engine is “probably in better shape” due to what BBR Gti have done to it?!

Rob

Engines can have problems due to a multitude of reasons, including those nothing to do with the fitment of aftermarket parts. Without a warrany, you might be up the creek wthout a paddle. I suppose that extends to the transmission.

BBR-GTI have had a few changes of ownership over the years, not sure they are the same as those that did the original BBR MX5. The present iteration started importing Corky Bell turbo kits. Though my direct experience of them is one of their employees being a complete timewaster when I was selling my S-Limited.

All I know on modding a car in warranty is to beware. A friend has recently bought a 20 plate Mini GP3. Was bought in as a px by the BMW/Mini dealership but when they plugged it in during a service ready for resale they found it has been chipped and that fully voids the warranty so cannot sell it on the forecourt. He bought it at trade price at around £30k as he knows the branch manager, beast of a machine but geez it’s an ugly beast to me with the side spoilers looking like bolted on mdf boards.

That’s an interesting point, I remember whilst working at a Mazda Main Dealer - Them sending me with a MX-5NC to a company to get the standard map reinstalled so we could put in back on our retail sales forecourt…!

Rob

I find all current minis ugly. Even in the dark.

To be fair, this applies to cars in or out of warranty.

Im quite surprised that so many people on here are so scared of modifications. Are we sports car enthusiasts or have I accidentally clicked onto mumsnet?

The market is hot like never before. So why not try selling it. I’m in the market for a 100th anniversary but i personally wouldn’t buy a modified one such as you describe. In my time i have owned several RS200 group B cars one evolution car with over 600 bhp, so i know a thing or two about tuning, from my experience originality is key.

Methinks there’s quite a difference in keeping a rare Group B rally car original compared to a mass produced MX5.

■■■…Group B, my absolute passion, S4 delta - 037 Lancia - T16 Pug - 6R4 - RS 200…what an era that was and never to be repeated, S4 delta will fetch nearly a £1000,000 now and my favourite one of all time the Sport quattro S1 E2 which cost around £70,000 - £80,000 in 1984 is now worth around £500,000 for just the road version …sorry I was getting excited as to most people group B means nothing, just watch and enjoy this, how do you drive a group B monster like this with such poise and balance and just listen to that 5 pot symphony !!
