MX5 boot bag

Hi

Off to Scotland again this year, want to take my spare wheel this time, so have been watching various Boot Racks, but came across this boot bag, anybody tried one? are they any good ?

I’ve used one, still got it.

We used it for a trip up to Scotland, rained most of the time.

The contents of the bag were still dry when we unpacked in the hotels.

Can be a bit of a worry if left on the boot if its out of sight. Its very easy to remove.

We got around that problem by putting it in the car when we stopped.

Saying that its very handy and i keep it in the boot just incase.

There are 2 sizes of bag, i have the bigger one, cant remember what size it is, but maybe the smaller one would suit you better.

This is the only photo i can find at the moment, mines the white one, the yellow one has the smaller bag on.

If you go on the boot bag website you can see both these cars in their heading photos

thanks for your reply, wife thinks I won’t be able to see out of my rear view mirror, can’t help agree did you have this issue, never usually have anything behind me anyway LOL

Steve

Hi Steve,
No, couldn’t see out of the mirror.
But i drive wagons for a living and they don’t have them, so its easy for me to just use the wing mirrors.

Will wait for all the remarks about hgv drivers not using mirrors anyway…LOL

Hi Steve

Using just the door mirrors is not too bad; you will quickly get use to it. I see that you have a mk3, have you thought about blocking the view of the high level brake light?

Richard.

Got one. Used it loads in all weathers. Great item.

I didn’t think HGV’s had mirrors…

We managed to get all the way to Italy without having the luxury of a rear view mirror, I prefer the Monte-Carlo or Bust method of hauling equipment on an MX5.

Great bit of kit! As said it can be stored in the boot or behind a seat when not in use so it`s always with you if your wife goes mad in the Sales lol

I find rear vision better than a rack as it sits lower down directly on the boot lid.

Also unless your other half has very long legs the spare wheel fits nicely behind the passenger seat Laughing

Apologies if slightly off topic of boot bag, but we’ve considered one a few times but been put off a bit with security issue of leaving luggage on the boot on a stop off (although I do take the valid point that they are easy to dismount and store in car).

We’ve always preferred to take spare wheel with us, and here’s a couple of alternative we’ve come up with:

Spare wheel on rack leaving more room for luggage in boot.  Also using deck bags which are great.

On recent trip to Brooklands which was a long weekend, I had a play around with various luggage options, trying to fit in the spare wheel, but not use the boot rack.  I found that angling the spare wheel in the well in the boot enabled a reasonable sized case to fit on top of it, then use the space under and around it, the deck bags and space behind the seats (especially passenger).  This will probably be our preferred option for trips away in future.

Always enjoyed touring in my Spitfire and working different ways of packing!
Rear shelf was useful. Don’t have that option with my mk3 mx :frowning:
Used to tuck an open sleeping bag down the back load bags then cover with the rest of the sleeping bag before strapping down

BTW I think you should have your boot rack the other way round. You’re unlikely to accelerate hard enough to lose properly tied down luggage but if you’re unlucky enough to be in a frontal collision the raised bar should offer some resistance to said luggage trying to take your head off!

That said … I’ve never had a boot rack

First touring trip in the mx will be Le Mans … Hope to be able to pack completely in the boot … We’ll see!
Although I do like the boot bag / racks. Plan to own a caterham one day so creative luggage solutions will be a must

Had one for 4 years, used it for all weekends away (had many)and longer periods.

14 Days around Germany in 2010 to the Rivers Mosel and Rhine, it was brilliant, always adaptable and agree with all other positive posts.

We are off to the Lake District this summer with the Boot Bag for 2 weeks.

One thing I am going to do is strengthen the 4 sides horizontally with light ply wood to give it more height and possibly a bit more space.

Just ensure you tape the ends of the straps down as they make a lot of noise flapping about.

Also take about 6+ very small bulldog clips to fix the ends of straps in the boot.

Please PM me for any more info

Mart,

I  take your point about the fitting of the rack. It’s been debated on here before. Most seem to be fitted this way, and some designs only fit one way, which is with the support bar at the back edge (not to say that it’s right).  I always make sure the rack is very securely fitted and cargo secured with sturdy leather straps. Anything sat on the boot probably has potential to travel forward in a collision, inc a full boot bag.

On a lighter note, when investigating ways to increase the luggage carrying potential of our Mk1 I came across this Surprised  Laughing

Love the top box!

You’d get a spare mx in there
