Has anyone used the facility of Mx5 City in Doncaster ? They offer a
'swop ’ seat service at what seems a reasonable price compaired to
alternatives . I am in Essex so a long way to go to be disappointed.
I’ve not used them, but I’ve put a link on the site used for communicating in this area see http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/nemx5oc/message/15893 worth checking if get any replies here. Also I’ve done a search on this forum see http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/14674/86584.aspx#86584 , it might be worth sending one of these members a PM. MX5 City look close to M1 & A1M, so should be OK to get to, apart from the long drive. I think somebody in Redcar (advertise on ebay) will recover your seats & might be worth checking, but they are 100 miles north of Doncaster. George
My car came from there originally,
I’ve been down to have a nosey round not actually used him for anything but had a chat and seemed reasonable. The recon tan seats he had in reception looked spot on
I’m half tempted to get the seats done too, I’ve since been told of a good re trimmer slightly closer to me so I’ll get a quote off them as well as he certainly knows how to charge,
Don’t dandy cars offer a similar sort of service ?
Used them to do some work on my NC. After they made a hash of it and I pointed out their mistakes they started making very spurious claims that anyone with any basic mechanical knowledge would know was rubbish let alone a supposed mx5 specialist. So they are either incompetent or were trying to palm me off with BS!
They refused to rectify the problem or compesate for the work I had to have done and have now stopped responding to communications.
Steer well clear!
My wife had work done on her Eunos last October. The price was very reasonable and the work was carried out to a high standard. In addition she bought some goodies which they fitted FOC, indeed they offered to do so before being asked!
I would certainly recommend them.
I put my mk1 into them to get both wheel arches/sills done last year, they contacted me on the Monday to say that the rust was too far gone to make repair economical. Sent me pictures and a video of the rust damage. He then offered to buy the car car from me, he made me a good offer for the car, my only complaint was the length of time it took him to agree a price and send me a cheque. In all I think it took around 6 weeks to get paid. And that was me chasing him up every few days.
I don’t suppose you checked their web site afterwards to see if your car had been repaired and put up for sale?
When I spoke to Martin Dooner last year, to get a quote for a full respray, he stated that due to the fact that supply of rust-free Mk1s from Japan had all but dried up it was now economical to repair cars that would have previously been scrapped due to corrosion.
Only just spotted this thread - just a year after it was posted! (I don’t go on forums too often!). I remember the car well, as we don’t consign many to the scrap heap (it belonged to a customer from Scotland). It was indeed a total basket case and would have been dangerous to put back on the road in my opinion. I took some pics and video, as I haven’t seen one as rotten before. Someone had obviously bodged it up in the past, which resulted in an acceleration of the corrosion to the all-important internal sill structure. I reckon that if it had been involved in even a minor accident, it would probably disintegrate into a pile of dust!
We obviously didn’t attempt to repair it ourselves, as it would have been totally uneconomical. In fact, I still have what remains of the bodyshell, piled up around the back of the workshop.

I had a look around this place about autumn 2010 and was not impressed. 2 blokes in workshop totally ignored me when I approached them. Large dog on the loose & scrap MX5 s in the yard full of rainwater. Overpriced 2nd hand cars in yard with misted windows & wet carpets tells a sad story. Found out from another club member the business had changed ha spotless little all day cafe
nds & the previous guy had set up on his own as MX5 Motors at an
industrial estate (Unit 9 Hutton Business Park, Hangthwaite Rd,
Carcroft, Doncaster,DN6 7BD) Phone 01302 726723. Spotless new workshop and was impressed so Steve Garbutt got over £800 of businees from me & I was well pleased with workmanship & value “I will return” said Gen Mc Arthur.
Hi Rick & Julie
I am sorry you did not enjoy your experience when visiting us last October. We work really hard here to try and help our customers, new and old alike and it upsets me to hear that you were ignored when visiting. I can only assume that, if you wandered into the workshop, rather than the reception area/shop, the 3 fully qualified technicians that are in there were probably engaged in servicing customers’ cars at the time and didn’t realise you were not being served. I don’t train my staff to ignore people - quite the opposite!
We do have a few scrap MX-5s in the corner of the yard from time to time (although most of them are around the back out of sight) and, like most scrapyards, when it rains they get wet. We use them as a source of cheap spare parts to help our customers keep their MX-5s on the road more economically.
Our sale cars start at under £2,000 and come with a comprehensive RAC backed Nationwide parts and labour warranty, free roadside recovery, full service, timing belts replaced, MOTed and often with road tax thrown in too. The cars are also independantly checked and inspected by the RAC for that extra peace of mind. I don’t believe they are overpriced, and neither do most of my customers - we have sold almost 2,000 cars in the last 12 years.
Just to put the record straight about the MX5 City - I founded the business back in 2001 and I am still the owner. It has never changed hands or stopped trading. Steve Garbutt was employed by me for a number of years until 2008. When he left I discovered he had set up his own MX-5 business whilst still working for me. He also wrote to all my customers at the time and told them I was no longer trading, so this may be where the confusion has arisen with regards to the ownership of MX5 City.

P.S. I see you also met my chief sales dog “Wesley” the little whippet. At least he didn’t ignore you!
I would just like to add a few comments on the subject of Steve Garbutt of MX5 Motors, I had rusty rear arches, sills, front wing and a repair on drivers door to repair, seemed at first he was very experienced and helpful but after taking my mx5 mark1 back for the third time because of his very poor quality paint work, dust and dirt inside and outside the car, not taking photos of work carried out that I had asked for at start of initial work and the lack of any phone calls to inform me of progress or problems (which there where many).
I have now had the car check by a local bodyshop as my trust and confidence in MX5 Motors is non existence, the list of problems is alarming. I am now looking at redoing all the work that has been done.
Be careful out there.
Just thought i would Bump this thread on a little.
I am about to take my MK1 Eunos to Mx5 Motors for a sill repair and MOT, they are very close to me, so convenient for me to drop the car off with them.
My Eunos is not my daily car so i have agree’d to leave it with them, Steve talked the talk and seamed pleasant enough on the phone.
Has anyone got anymore reasons why i shouldnt use them or MX5 City for that matter.
Who else in the Doncaster /yorkshire area,Painter Dave is another, but i need MOT also.
Kev
good luck with it
See my seperate thread on MX5 Motors.
Just to make my comments about MX 5 City, I bought my MK1 Eunos from Martin in April this year, The service I had was brilliant ! I wanted to buy a MX5 for myself and my wife for some nice weather fun ! I test drove the vehicle a 1990 model which was superb. The vehicle was serviced and tested, and I took the vehicle home and carried out my own valeting to my standards. I would thoroughly recommend MX5 City to anyone for a friendly, personal service !!
May as well chuck my thoughts in.
I’ve been down and bought a few bits of Mx5 City also discussed exhausts and sill and arch repairs with them. Everytime the chap (who i think is owner) was friendly and most helpful, even showed me around his workshop/spray booth etc. I didnt get the body work done there in the end, no reason other than i choose Autoline Wigan as slightly cheaper. Wasn’t overly impressed with the stock on show at the time i called but other than that i wouldn’t hesitate to give them a chance if i needed something major doing.

Deepcar Autobodies for paint and Roddisons for MOT, servicing and repairs.
Just to add to the discussion, I was passing by mx5 city about a month ago and having just bought my mk1 I popped in for some general advice re cambelt, sill repairs, and performance tweaks.
It was past 6pm and yet the owner, Martin broke off doing his tax return to spend over 30 mins showing me the on going work in the workshop and giving me extensive advice.
On the evidence of that type of customer service I will be using them for my cambelt change and sill work and will report back
