I hope your neighbour had insurance. Car is guaranteed to be writen off.

Yes indeed, it would be great if you were to do a rebuild thread👍

Really sorry to hear this, and to see the picture.

A well-loved car, especially an MX-5, is so much more than “just a car” - at least it is to us!

The older they get, the more irreplaceable they become.

If you do elect to deal with the write off from the insurer ( and stick it to them…it’s yours not theirs), then I would say Prestige Mk2/M2.5 specialists may become handy.
Give them this link, and hopefully they will play fair as they usually do BTW on prices.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that tip - I have looked at these guys in the past but, I have to admit, had forgotten about them.

The plus side is that from what you are saying is the house is OK. While the garage is being rebuilt you will be there to check everything is being done to your satisfaction.

From the head point of view the car and bike can be replaced. From the heart side we all know it’s a bit different. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about this incident.

I do have to say that I’m very impressed that the car went through a brick wall with only superficial structural damage, and that the passenger cell looks completely intact.

If do do have to rebuild your garage, do you have any potential to make it a bit larger? I’ve yet to see a garage that couldn’t benefit from being a couple of feet wider!

Gutted for your loss. Cannot put a price on the love and pride we put into these wee little cars. As Mr. (Startrek) Spock says “Illogical “But agree with Philip. Quite impressed with the “apparent” minimal frontal damage. Quite reassuring in a way. What’s the rear end like?? A few years ago had a Volvo 760 that was written off because of crunched front wing. Got paid out £700 odd quid, asked how much to buy it back from the insurance… they wanted £50!! (Car was still on my drive) bought wing from breakers, fitted myself and had it sprayed, came out of it with £200 notes in the back pocket. I’d say do it if you can
Good luck. ( p.s. Glad you’ve still got your sense of humour re HTST comment)

Holy **** I would not be happy wither !! My guess is it was an “older” driver in an automatic with “wrong foot syndrome”?

My first thought too was how well the front end seems from the photo. Bets wishes and I hope it all gets resolved soon.

And the bike as well !!!

5 days later and I have spent most of that dealing with 4 different insurance companies and their franchised out services. Its years since I have had to deal with car insurance companies (over 30 years!) and I must say things have changed somewhat - not all for the good from what I can see so far. I now wish I had gone down the route of getting a specialist insurer who would pretty much guarantee a value. Both the car and the motorcycle were in tip top condition - and both very low mileage. Through no fault of my own I can see some fairly low offers coming my way (a so a battle over their true value). The other thing that concerns me is that we have a personalised plate on the car and so it looks as though we could lose this - Does anyone have any experience of deal with this type of situation?? Help would be appreciated.
People have commented on how well the front end stood up to the accident - The bonnet has quite a few issues due to falling brickwork hitting it, the front has a split in the plastic and a dent below the spot light, amazingly the windscreen survived! Every panel on the car has some form of damage, the soft-top has a small hole in it.
Once again thanks to everyone for their kind comments/thought.
PS - just learnt that you no longer get a match to the existing brickwork!!!

I THINK…only think…you can put a plate on retention until such times it’s needed.
Seem to recall this sad issue before in the Forum.

You can put the plate on retention today online for £80. A new (old) registration number will be issued.

That’s it Ian. Thanks.
I’d add that £80.00 to " Uninsured Losses" as well.
*od 'em.
In for a penny, in for a pound OP.

If as you say every panel and also the roof has damage the chances of the car being repaired seem virtually nil. Probably best to put the registration on retention now.

A replacement registration will be issued. If you purchased the car used and put the personalised number on yourself then the original number should be reissued. If you kept the original plates and have them in (what is left of) the garage you can refit them.

Don’t forget to tell the insurance company about the change of registration.

Might as well also SORN the car and bike before the end of the month.

As said above.
For the future get it added into your policy that the Private Registration plate belongs to you no matter what happens.
For example, if abroad or hospitalised (god forbid) as a result of an accident you would not be in a position to deal with it straight away.
Some insurance companies will expedite matters not in your control.
Hope all works out and all the best. :slightly_smiling_face::+1:

“Over 30 yrs Since Last Claim”…ditto !

2019…some ****** slashed my soft top. I reported it to the police who initially ignored me. Went through Victim Gateway & got Crime Number. Paid for new soft top & fitting myself & eventually Insurers paid up [minus my excess]

BUT DURING THIS MARATHON…HAD REGULAR CONTACT SAYING

“Your Vehicle is a Write Off”

What ???

I was vulnerable because 2005 NB [Corrosion] and I hadn’t/haven’t done half the work you’ve done on Ruby
Just saying ‘beware’ of accepting low offers [chance is Ruby will not be written off but sold off only to re-emerge]

Don’t be Bullied…There is What They Think She’s Worth & What You or I or Many a Club Member Thinks She’s Worth

Make Sense ?

Or am I just a ‘sucker for punishment’ re restoring a mature MX5 ??

Being a bit pedantic, but all registration marks actually belong to DVLA and you only have a right to use them.

This right can be removed at any time (and DVLA specifically warn that if you attempt to misrepresent the number - e.g. by changing the font or adding a stratgically placed screw - they may do so).

Indeed, people will know exactly what I am talking about and nothing to do with font size or whatever.
It’s one’s right to “retain” it in your possession/name etc and NOT sold with the car.
All the best.
