MX5/Eunos coil packs. Mk1 and Mk 2/2.5 cars

Can a Mod please make this sticky please? I did ask on the original thread, but it seems to have been ignored. It does contain valuable information for any owner needing a replacement ignition coil pack, and deserves to be prominent as such. Thank you.

For anyone that may be interested…

MK1 - MK2.5 and Eunos Coils
All the units(1989 - 2005) are made by hansh/n except the MK1 1.6 which appears to be mitsubishi.

All mounted to back of engine on cradle apart from the MK2.5 1.8 where units mounted on top of cam cover.

All cradles can be dismantled and units interchanged apart from the MK1/Eunos 1600.

MK1 1600 - 1989 - 1998(Eunos and MK1) - Mitsubishi coilpack with combined unit in cradle - fixed wire connections with three pin connector that joins loom

MK1 1800 - 1993 - 1995(Eunos and pre-immobiliser MK1) - coilpack with two hansh/n DSC - 500 units in cradle, 4 pin. Low tension plugs directly off loom

MK1 1800 - 1996 - 1998(MK1 with immobiliser) - coilpack with two hansh/n DSC - 500B units in cradle, 3 pin(same as the 4 but missing PIN). Low tension plugs directly off loom

MK2 1800 - 1998 - 2000(Eunos and MK2) - coilpack with two hansh/n DSC - 500B units in cradle, 3 pin(same as MK1 above). Low tension plugs directly off loom

MK2/MK2.5 1600 - 1998 - 2005(Eunos, MK2 and MK2.5) - coilpack with two hansh/n DSC - 510 units in cradle, 3 pin. Low tension plugs on stub loom, six pin connector to main loom

MK2.5 1800 - 2001 - 2005(Eunos and MK2.5) - two hansh/n DSC - 1500, 3 pin. Low tension plugs directly off loom

Bump.

No-one else thinks it’s important?

I think there is a mistake, or at least an omission.

1996 - 1998 Mk1. Wasn’t it just UK cars that had the immobiliser? My 1997 Eunos hasn’t for certain.

It isn’t my list, Rhino 666 posted this in another thread, I’ve just copied it because I think it’s useful. (Seems no-one else thinks so) - Is this the sentence you say is wrong?

“MK1 1800 - 1996 - 1998(MK1 with immobiliser) - coilpack with two hansh/n DSC - 500B units in cradle, 3 pin(same as the 4 but missing PIN). Low tension plugs directly off loom”

No Eunos listed, I assume Mk1 refers to UK cars only. O/K - that is perhaps misleading, but depends how you look at it, don’t you think? The list is mainly about Coil Packs, immobilisers are a separate issue, no idea why they were included.

No Eunos cars were fitted with a factory immobiliser.

All Eunos 1800 cars with popup headlights have a four pin coilpack.

You are right, the list has missed post 1995 Eunos 1800 cars.

From my experience of selling these coil units and packs there is a general lack of knowledge. This actually helps me sell parts as people approach me for advice and then buy the parts.

It seems I can’t even shoot myself in the foot nowadays:-)

Part numbers and vin ranges (UK Phase 1, 2, NB, NB2, and equivalent ranges for JDM, plus JDM Phase 1.5, and A, B C etc part variations) would be an essential addition, otherwise this is just anecdotal information.

My 1996 Eunos Roadster has only ever had 3-pin coilpacks; both the original, and the new replacement unit ordered through Mazda UK from Japan. Ordering through Mazda is easy; give them the Japanese VIN, and the part is with you within 4-5 working days.

I believe the list as it stands is correct but my last additional comment appears to to be incorrect. Obviously if any other part of it appears anecdotal/incorrect, it should be discussed/amended and kept rather than ignored as appears to be the case at the moment. I assume as a moderator the decision here is yours?

For this to be useful the list needs to be factual and correct rather than anecdotal. There appears to be nothing similar around so I would suggest it would be a useful addition to the technical section.

As regards the Eunos 1800(and earlier MK1 1800), four pin coilpacks had the extra pin for the rev counter. On the three pin it went to ECU control. I notice that all earlier Eunos cars were fitted with a BPF3 whereas the later cars(1996/7) had a much rarer BPS5. This leads me to believe that there were far fewer of these cars imported and why my knowledge of this could be incorrect. My theory/anecdote here based on your coilpack and the ecu change is that the BPS5 ecu took control of the tacho and the Eunos 1800 was then fitted with the later three pin coilpack.

There is only one part number on the original three pin units fitted to the MK1, MK2 and Eunos 1800, although the cradle is slightly different for MK1/MK2 - MK2 has an extra cable support bracket.

I have amended the list - please see below

I’m happy to put this in the FAQ if everyone agrees that the list is correct

Geoff give it a day or so and I will put Mazda part numbers on the list.

Anything on the numbers Eddie

Japanese part numbers and VIN ranges:

US part numbers/VIN ranges:

Any progress?
