mx5 heartfelt disappointment

Greetings to you all.

I have a desperate need for some help/advise. I have just bought my first mx5 from a main dealer (I know but its along story).

After owning it for 6 weeks I have to say that i am gutted at the poor gear change. I bought a mk1 for my daughter and liked hers so much that i finally took the plunge myself after thinking about the idea from time to time.

Got myself a mk2 53 plate with only 33000miles. Problem is, the down change. From 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd the gearchange is appalling. It feels like the clutch is not opening the gate for the gear to engage (like there is no gap for the lever to fit into !)

My daughters car is sweet. I have been very careful with the changes almost forcing my foot through the floor before trying to haul the gears into place, having to lift off the clutch and dipping it again. By then of course i have travelled another 100 yds.

Has anyone experienced this with their own car. I have heard that clutches can be an issue with this model but it bites well and there is no judder. Also, i have been told that changing gearbox oil for another type can help but i have just had the oil changed at the dealer with an additive, but no change.

 HELP ME !!!

PS -  I need a heated screen adaptor for a mk1 hardtop to a mk2 car. Where can i get one from?

Have you gone back to the dealer? I would think there ought to be some guarantee, otherwise why buy from a dealer. When I bought my MX5 from a main dealer I was given a 2 year guarantee, but I haven’t needed it - yet

Sounds like the clutch cylinder is on it’s way out.

You need to either return to where you bought it and get them to fix it, or take it to a garage.

First, the dealer should fix the problem, The Mk2 has basically the same change as the Mk1. The only different ones are the six speeds. Sounds like it could be one or more of the following

OIl in gearbox, a good quality [Red line is my choice] oil

Change the slave cylinder, they only cost a few quid and half an hour to change   http://mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/200.aspx

The turret on top of the gear box does dry out when the seals above fail, here’s a guide to changing them, this cures a lot of stickey gearchange problems. Most Mazda main dealers don’t know about this one…   http://mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/201.aspx

Have a good read through the faqs at the top of this section, loads of good info in there, oh and by the way

G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum

I’m going to move this post to a more appropriate place
