i have seen what looks like a mk2 air flow meter on a mk1, i noticed it seems identical to my dads mk2.5, (round type) can anyone confirm if you can do a straight swap for these items to the mk1?
many thanks

1.6 Mk1s used a Bosch-type flapper Air flow Meter. Mk1 1.8s used a hot-wire type mass-air sensor. Not sure a Mk2.5 MAS will retrofit onto a Mk1 1.8, and I don’t know why you you would want to. The car in the picture is a B-spec. The MAS looks standard to me.
Other Air Flow Meters can be made to fit the 1.6; RX7 meters can yield a little more top end power:

There were rumours that Mazda North America cobbled together a 1990 car with a Mazda MPV mass air sensor. You will neda new ECU for that. Of course, with an aftermarket ECU, you can eliminate the AFM anyhow.
i wondered due to space under the bonnet, my filter is right next to the headers, mine is like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mazda-MX5-MX-5-Polished-Air-Flow-Meter_W0QQitemZ170343146133QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item27a93e2295&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1683|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50
but i have heard that the shorter, newer version fits? that way i can move things around easier
What shorter newer version? The same AFM was used 1989-1993 and 1995-1997 on 1.6s, then it was tossed in the proverbial parts dustbin. It is possible to somehow wire up a hot-wire mass air sensor, but you’d need to be a wizard whern it comes to electronics. All to gain an inch or so. There is no newer, shorter version of the Air Flow Meter.
Far far cheaper to toss your existing intake setup, and spend £300 or so on something like the Jackson CAI from Moss. It moves the AFM to the front of the engine.
Or spend £500 or so, and figure out how to wire in something like a Megasquirt ECU, and get rid of the AFM altogether. Then, if you want, you can move the filter to behind the driver’s light. Ah, did I mention the Helmholtz resonance chambers? Thats another can of worms…
sounds interesting, will have a look. just constantly looking at changes, i have a friend who has his filter behind the light, on his mk2… i want it on mine but with the metal air flow meter it is impossible
