I have a Mk1 with a Dallas immobiliser touch key (looks like a watch battery mounted on a piece of plastic). You offer the key up against a place on the dash (near the ignition) to deactivate the immobiliser. The immobiliser works fine but i only have one of these Dallas keys so i was wanting to know if anyone knows where i might get a spare. I’ve tried Mazda in Taunton who said this must be a retrofit immobiliser which sounds right based on http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/154/303.aspx#303. I’ve also tried phoning a few other places but haven’t got anywhere. Any ideas?
Yep the immobilisers were fitted by the UK importer on arrival so strictly speaking they are “aftermarket”. The Dallas touchkeys can still be obtained though…
The touch keys used to available from good electronic components stores such as Maplin but, having looked at recent catalogues it would appear that they no longer stock it. The equipment is still being made though and is available, although it’s now marketed as “iButton” technology for security systems. If you need replacement keys they are available from America so check out www.ibutton.com/products/ibuttons.html The item you need is the DS1990A-F3 (although I aso have a DS1990A-C8F that also works OK and DS1990A-F5 are also OK) which is an ID-only button and should cost about $2 plus shipping. Alternatively you could call the Maxim/Dallas UK office on 0800 585 048. I’ve pasted the link to the international distributors details for your info. http://www.maxim-ic.com/company/contact/sales_offices_en.cfm/filter/idistributors.
I know one or two people that I have helped have contacted them regarding the buttons and have been put through to the technical team who, because the buttons were on back-order, were sent 2 fobs as a “sample”!
The trick (and difficult bit) is knowing how to code them. I have managed this before and you have one working touchkey so you should be OK but drop me an email via my details on here and I’ll give you come more info (not keen on posting here).
