MX5 MK2 1.6i ECU

My year 2000 car has a B6ML ECU.

Does anyone know if a B6MV ECU   from a 2001 car would work.  I am thinking that the later car has ABS and that may be the only difference as my car does not have ABS.

Thanks

Rob

Is the 2000 car a pre-facelift? If so it’ll be without EOBD which will be a problem for a facelift ECU. The downstream lambda sensor will be missing for example.

Yes, thanks for that.  I was told it was a MK2 but with a ‘51’ plate clearly going to be a MK2.5 with OBD, etc.

We have good selection of ecu,s incl keys and immobiliser unit .I can check your exact number if you like as its easy to post over to you.Robert …mx5 Ireland sponsor

Thanks Robert

Not sure what the problem is with this car but it is frustrating.  I am in the trade too - Rob Rhind from MX5Bitz.  Bought this MK2 to tidy up and sell.  It had a blocked hood drain that had drenched the carpet and taken a track out on the ECU.  Got it repaired/tested by an ECU specialist and the car started.  It has the sweestest engine I have encountered in an MX5 and after months of not running, there was not a sign of a tap or rattle.  It has been running since september 2012 but there are problems and typically the problems I tend to get with MX5s are not straightforward.  On two occasions it has fired up and run very smoothly on three cylinders.  No misfiring, everything fine just running on three.  Restarting several times didn’t cure the problem but on both occasions when left overnight, it started fine on all four the next day.

In addition to this the car starts first time but needs to turn over on the starter for at least twice as long as my MK1 before firing - not sure if this is a MK2 thing?

When warm and running, coming to a stop, the car does not drop back immediately to its natural idle.  Seems to sit at around 1500rpm for at least 5 seconds before dropping quickly back.

As I said, the intention was to sell the car but as the three cylinder running problem occured with 2 of the 3 people that have come to look at the car(unbelievably unlucky) and on no other occasion, I have decided to run the car myself to try and sort out this problem.  Car flew through its MOT yesterday but another problem.  Battery that has been fine all over the winter had gone completely flat at the garage - they had to jump start it and leave it running.  I am wondering if I am being cursed.

Anyway the problems all indicate electrical rather than mechanical malfunction, so I am thinking that a test of another ECU wouldn’t be a bad idea.

The irony of all this is that I am working with my mountain biking friend, Greg Chambers on coding and replacement of MX5 ECUs.  Greg set up Advanced Diagnostics and then sold to move down here to Devon.  He has already got some new Lucas immobiliser units on the way so with a B6ML ECU I could potentially kill several birds with one stone.

Now I had exact problem with my mk2 year 2000,1.6 .I bought it with non start and a damp passenger floor. The drain hole was completely blocked so cleared that.Dried out the ecu and car started fine but not running well despite being on 50k on clock.I drove about 70mlies one day and went to get fuel but when I came out battery was flat .!!!Had to buy set jump leads for 25stg.Anyway swopped ecu and imobiliser and keys and car stared fine no issues and I have been driving since incl passed MOT yesterday.I think you need to do the same .I think I might have the bits you need for say 100stg to you plus postage.Otherwise car will not be reliable and will break your heart with different issues. My phone number in Dublin is 00353 86 8226506 or email robert.maguire@eircom.net.Thanks

Hi Robert

That’s a coincidence, particularly with the MOT being a day apart.

Seems the MK2 alternator regulator is part of the ECU so it does look like the ECU a distinct possibility with the charging problem.

Can you confirm that you have a B6ML ECU, immobiliser and transponder keys?

Thanks

Rob

Hi I will check later today but I am sure its the same issue as I said my car was starting fine for days and I went about 70miles and got petrol and battery weas flat when I went to start .Could,nt believe it.Anyway fitted used ecu kit and no problems since and that was around Christmas 2012.Sold car since .

Hi I have checked all the ecu,s that are removed from cars and none are B6ml .but some are B6MV .I also have 2 more 2000/2001 1.6 uk cars here for breaking but i need to remove cover plates over ecu to see the numbers. Are you still looikng for one?My phone nu,ber is 00353 86 8226506 if you rather text. Thanks

Hi - I haven’t found one yet but not tried any of my trade contacts.

If the car is a MK2 1600 manual, pre facelift without onboard diagnostics, post cat lambda sensor, etc, it will very likely have the B6ML ECU.  I don’t think any other ECU was fitted to UK spec cars of this type but can’t comment if the car has come from elsewhere.

I will call the ECU repairer I used tomorrow as spent a fair bit on the repair and testing.  There  is a one year guarantee and I would expect the testing to have picked up on an alternator regulator problem, even if it missed some of the more obscure issues.  They may have a B6ML as also recode/clone ECUs but I doubt it.

Let me know if you have one. Thanks

I checked both cars at 7.30am this morning and both are B6MV also.Would it be worth trying a B6MV and check is for something is not working /Sorry about this

This would not work for the reasons pointed out by Roadster Robbie in an earlier post ie. this ECU comes from the later engine with onboard diagnostics, so incompatible.

I found an ECU and associated bits, fitted today and all obvious problems cured.  Battery charging, revs behaving normally and the starter spins less revolutions to start .  The professionally repaired ECU has regrettably wasted time and money although it was great to get the car started.  A diagnostics expert had a look at the repaired ECU and blames one of the two repairs on the ECU track for disabling the regulator function.

Can anyone(Roadster Robbie:-)) tell me where the regulator is located on the B6ML ECU.  I am thinking it’s the NEC B1453, a short way up on the left hand side of the main board.

Thanks

Sorry, I have no knowledge of the inside workings of PCM’s.

Thanks Robbie - it makes me feel a little better to find something you don’t know about:-)
