MX5 MK2.5 Airbag warning light flashing

We have had our 2002 MK2.5 for a couple of years without a problem but recently the airbag warning lights have been coming on and one of them flashes 4 times slowly and then 8 times more quickly.  The problem comes and goes but is becoming more persistant.  We thought initially that it was something to do with connections under the passenger seat but these have been checked and the problem continues.  Apart from safety concerns, this may affect a forthcoming  MOT test.  Our local repairer has investigated but has not been able to find the cause.

Has anyone managed to resolve a similar problem?  Any advice would be appreciated.

I found on a french site that code 48 relates to the passenger seat occupancy sensor. Hope this helps

Hi

Thanks for the input.
As we have not been able to bypass the sensor problem, I am wondering if the circuitry for LH drive models changes when the car is RH drive or whether it could be the driver’s seat causing the light to flash and we have been looking in the wrong place.
At the moment, my partner thinks her posterior is responsible!!

The passenger seat is the passenger seat, whether left or right drive. As I recall, there is no sensor in the driver seat. The problem with many Mazda models of this era,is that the sensor is part of the seat cushion.Simple solution is to buy a sensor simulator module.Plug and play ,with plenty on flea-bay.

I may be wrong but I do not think that there is an occupancy sensor in the drivers seat, as there will always be a driver in the car heavy enough to warrant the airbag to go off. Not so on the passenger side.

I am sure its not your partners posterior…probably a dodgy connection or duff sensor !

My thanks to LffSam and Missfire  for your insights into my Airbag light problem.

Until now, we had not been able to conclusively identify what was making the light flash intermittently and I was reluctant  to splash out on a sensor emulator until other possible causes had been ruled out.

It looks like you guys were right because it now appears that there is an intermittent short occurring in the seat sensor, so hopefully, a sensor emulator will solve the problem.

I am sure Beryl  will be relieved  to see an end to my teasing regarding the effect her behind is having on the car’s electrics, however, I suspect that secretly she is rather pleased that her figure can still make lights flash, even at our age.
