MX5 Mk3 NC1/2 DRLs & Fog Lights

MX5Parts is selling a new Mk3 DRL and fog light kit (Linky), courtesy of IL Motorsport, for £175 delivered. Not exactly inexpensive, but I bit the bullet and ordered it, and couldn’t be happier.

This kit fits a NC1 out of the box, but does require some fettling of the inner OEM fog light trim for the NC2. The instructions recommend major surgery which removes one of the retaining screws; it turns out to be unnecessary if you have a Dremel with drum sander to hand. If you get this kit and try to fit it on a NC2 you will see the problem, and solution.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to embed videos on this forum, but if you want to know what the upgrade looks like in action here’s a Linky.

Mine are on back order, thanks for the tip. Great video, thanks

Just received my Kit direct from IL Motorsport, £152 delivered so a little cheaper than MX5P. I took advantage of a Halloween discount of 10€. Instructions aren’t exactly self explanatory to a numpty like me so I guess I might have to get someone to fit them for me.

Seems they are now on offer on mx5 parts down to £152 until 17th November

Question to those who have fitted them. Do they come on with the ignition and then toggle between the DRLs and fog light option via the switch?

Plus £7.50 delivery.

I haven’t fitted mine yet but they come on with the ignition and when the headlights are selected they extinguish and then you may select fog lights if required via the standard switch.

Cheers vindaloo

Thanks for the reply. I’d guessed they would come on with the ignition, sensible for them to, but you never know.

Are they sealed units or can you change the bulbs if they failed?

Where did you mount the LED drivers?

As high as I could level with the horns (which I must change next). I did take a photo, but it’s out of focus!..

Not a great photo, but you get the idea were it is following the cables.

Thanks John, did you manage to fit them with just the front arch liner removed or did you remove the bumper?

Jim

Jim, just remove the liner will do, but not easy on a jack/stands - on a ramp you can do it easy as you have to mess around passing wires down and across the front behind the bumper. I must add I did not fit them, I took it to Michael at http://www.mx5expert.com/ for my yearly service and he kindly fitted them for me whilst on service. They are very bright.

John

Thanks John, I can probably blag the use of a hydraulic lift at my local garage, I’m a bit long in the tooth for grovelling around on the floor!

Jim, they are worth every penny and you will be pleased with the result. The instructions are spot on and it is a DIY job I was just to lazy… and Michael is very helpful plus I trust him with my MX5 and these days that a hard thing to find.

John

Couple of questions if you dont mind.
Fit and mount the lights…ok, not a problem.
Plug into and mount the drivers…again ok, not a problem.
Now do you link the drivers together and simply run a pos and neg tap to the fuse box and let the drivers do their magic turning the lights on and off in the correct sequence?

PM me your email address and I’ll send you a pdf of the instructions

Done

Seems a very simple job.
Double fuse and a scotch lock.
P.M. sent.
