MX5 NA/NB short throw shifter

Hey guys!

I’ve 80% completed my manual swap on my once auto 1990 NA.

Now with the transmission, I got given a short shifter kit, but upon using it now it doesn’t feel right, the shifter doesn’t love freely, gets stuck, and half the bits are actually missing.

This is an NA Miata, but I swapped it with a manual from an NB, didn’t think it would make a difference, but I can’t seem to properly install the kit as in the turret there are 2 pins blocking the way, and in EVERY video I see there’s only one pin, apparently there would be a short shifter kit for an NB where the turret spacer has 2 notches but I still can’t find that.

Also the original ring bush that was allegedly under the 2 pins was broken off and now I only have half of it, the spacer won’t fit, but I just put the new bushing and spring with the kit ontop of the 2 pins, followed my the mount, the shifter and bolt em down, but it’s super loose and I know it’s wrong.

Do I need a special kit? This gearbox didn’t have a shifter so the short throw was the first to go in, also what do I do about the lower bush, it doesn’t seem to come with the kit but I still need it, I sem to only have half the short shift kit anyways, missing bushings.

Does the pin come out? So I need a shifter rebuild kit or short shifter kit and can I get that broken bushing independently?

Firstly, why do you want a short shifter in a MX5? Honestly, what advantage or purpose do you think it serves? Besides something you read on the Internet. I can shift with my pinkie (factory 96, 270k kms). Its slick, like a well maintained non-Ishipore SMLE action. I can’t imagine it being any better.

Secondly, most short shifter kits are junk. They don’t bother changing the fulcrum, and if you are really wanting this, then save your paper money, get a hacksaw and a tap n die set.

Yes, you need a NB shifter for a NB gearbox. Fix it up as Mazda intended.

Because I’m a fully fledged redneck and the job was DONE and thats about it haha, I mean i used random bolts for my pressure plate and used a half inch extension as a clutch alignement tool.

I brough a mk2 and engine and gearbox for £135 and the dude gave me a short shifter as the first shifter to go in that gearbox, so short shifter was my only option, I cut the spacer to fit into both grooves which now fits and the shifter is abit better, I ordered a new lower bush to put around the shifter as indicated from the short shifter maniacs, I drove that car and it works so I’m happy with that.

|Now I have to sortout the gearbox wiring and speedo cable, the mk1 has a like mechnical wire for the speedo and I can assume the mk2 gearbox has an electrical speedo from what I see, it’s what you get when you mismatch to save money or time
