MX5 NC 3 vs 3.5 front & rear shocks

Hey guys,

I recently sold my NC3 & bought a 3.5, I bought a set of Bilstein shocks that I was going to restore for my 3 but ofcourse got rid of the car since then, I was wondering would these work for my 3.5? as I’ve seen on MX5 Parts that there are separate listings for bilstein shocks for the 3s & 3.5s so Im not too sure what the differences between the 3s & 3.5s are,

Any info would be massively appreciated,

Thanks all,
Aleks

I don’t know the definitive answer, but…
There was a change in suspension between the 3 and 3.5 that lowered the ‘centre of roll’. Not sure if that was a physical change or simply lowered.

I have a NC1 2008 and bought a Bilstien B12 kit for it, only to find out there are two kits. I investigated the differences and found out the shocks (Bilstien B8s) were identical, but that the NC1 springs were 10mm longer (unloaded).

Both spring types fit both cars, the earlier type are billed as 35mm drop, the later ones 30mm drop.

In short, I don’t think you will have any issue with fitting the NC1 shocks and springs on an NC2.

The earlier car had springs that settled with the car bering higher on the road compared to later versions. Mazda changed that i believe from 3.5 onwards

Personally I don’t think there were changes to the dampers.

I think you be absolutely fine mate

Awesome thanks for the info guys

I would phone MX5 parts and ask, the shock absorbers as well as the springs come in different varieties for the different marks. (And wheel size for the earlier ones.)
You don’t want to accidently end up with a Mk3.5 that sports a Mk3 ride height.

Yes, I’d agree with that, contact MX5 parts and ask them. The shocks for the 3.5 also differ between the soft top and the folding hard top versions. Check it out first.

if you go shopping for aftermarket shock absorbers there is only one selection for an nc.
For example Suspension for Mazda MX-5 - 2005-2015 - (NC / EC) | Öhlins

Mazda has different springs (length and stiffness) as they were continuously refining the car.

They would in all probability be wasted on me but for the Ohlins’ level of coin I’d rather have a more refined one piece.

Thats a bit more coin than ohlins if you add import fees. However the guy already has suspension he was just wondering whether it would fit (which it will)
