MX5 NC central cupholder

It drives me mad as it is useless. Is there any way of removing it easily, so I can just have storage space?

On both of my NC3/Mk3.75’s it just lifts straight up, leaving (as you say) useful storage space. What generation of NC is yours?

There is an option to replace the cup holders with a storage box on the NC1

It is a 2008 NC3, I believe, Philip. I didn’t want to try to prise it out, break it and be left with a right mess!

Mine just lifts up and leaves the dotted matt under, no mess. i leave the cup holder in the back storage until the wife wants a starbucks lol

Many thanks - perhaps I am just being a bit of a wimp!

As posted in the link above from mx5parts, this fitted to my previous NC1. Agree they are pretty useless as standard with cup holders. Mine was ideal to place the phone in there to connect up to Android Auto on the head unit.
Just requires the centre console removing and swap the lower parts over.

The difference with the NC2, the centre divider/cup holders pull out.

That’s really helpful. Can I retain the lid to hide glasses, change etc.?

Mick - this seems an opportune moment to ask, on the NC2 when the armrest is open should it stay retracted as you have it pictured?

I’ve noticed with mine that it tends to move forward on its own under braking.

My NC3’s are the same as the NC2 that @MickAP shows in his picture, and both stay open under braking!

Thanks. I was presuming it should stay put when it’s retracted!

Will investigate further :+1:

Hi yassoumartin,
If your car is a 2008 it will be an NC1 which is what we have. The cupholders on the NC1 are not removable.
You will need to remove the entire centre console and replace the cupholder part with the MX5parts Centre Console Storage Tray as mentioned above. The sliding lid will be retained. The Storage Tray also has a useful 12v power outlet.
Not that difficult a job to do yourself

Or, you could replace the entire centre console, with one from a mk 3.5 or 3.75.
Very easy job to do, you just need to find the parts at a breakers or on Fleabay.
Here’s mine, which I did two weeks ago. :slightly_smiling_face:
(I changed the gators and armrest cover, while I had it all apart)

Ironically, I don’t have a divider for my NC3.75 and it drives me bonkers.
Dont throw it away - i’ll find you at the Spring meet!
