MX5 NC fun road and light track car

Thought I’d get a project thread up after introducing myself in the welcome area.

Luckily had some brilliant cars and loved taking them on trackdays but times changed a bit and wanted something much cheaper for track to go alongside a nicer classic road car that does a bit of touring.

So the MX5 I have…
3 owners from new
Under sealed and cavity treated from delivery (with pics and receipts to show)
2.0 non sport
BC coilovers
Buddy Club wheels
Cobalt back box.

I got it in March last year as I needed a fun car to take to the Black Forest with friends and I’d sold my Elise and didn’t want to take my SL500 as it would be too harsh on it.

Trip below:

I’ve done about 4k miles in it since March including the Germany trip as it’s the only ULEZ car I own.

Plans wise need to fit this…

Going on a Cybul rail to try and get me as low as possible.

I’ve then also serviced it with Fuchs Titan XTR which is always a good oil I find.

Ride height got it spot on I think for the road and also added the BC adjusters to make it easier to adjust the rear dampers.

First track day is booked for Bedford on 23 September - not really a circuit to suit the MX5 but my mates got his first Porsche and wants someone to follow and build the pace up so I said I’d help while he does that.

Plans in the future:

  • fit seat
  • PHRT roller bar
  • manifold and map

Then that’s about it!

I absolutely adore it - considering the whole package cost less than a set of brakes and tyres in my GT3 gives real perspective of what real fun is!

I’ve got the resistors to go in but anything else I need to know ahead of prepping the removal of the drivers seat?

Battery unhooked for an hour before I assume?

Thanks

Managed to get my seat fitted in time for a very wet Bedford and my first time on track in the MX5 today.

The car was incredible with so much balance and was great fun to chuck around. As some of you will know from my intro thread I’ve owned some cool metal, none of which gave the confidence of the little Mazda, what a car…

…however one thing did let it down which was the brakes, with a real judder occuring after only 3 or so laps. Given it was wet this was quite disappointing. The previous owner fitted braided lines and Castrol SRF so no problem there which means it must be the EBC grooved and dimpled discs and red stuff pads. Both fine for the road but not great on track.

Think I’ll just get some plain discs and roddisons pads.

Overall though super happy.

Couple of proper pics, running the car soft certainly helped with grip!

Right all big trip for next year booked with an Alps adventure.

Things to sort this year:

  • diff and gearbox fluid -last done 2023
  • oil service - seems to have been done every 5k since new so might as well keep this going .
  • discs and pads -the EBC stuff that came with the car is useless.

Tomorrow I’m doing the underside rustproofing, again got receipts of it being done nearly every year since new so might as well continue.

One thing I’d love to do is a manifold and a map but for £1k all in I’m wondering whether it feels like that steps outside of the ‘budget fun’

Whilst I originally planned to do plenty of trackdays in it I’m actually finding it’s more of a en enjoyable lovely road car.

Today was the day as it looks like it’s only going to get colder and that means grit and salt… So after a trip food shopping I came back and got fully dressed for a day of rolling about under the car.

I had pre cleaned the underside of the car with a hot jet wash and got rid of any mucky bits so I was starting with a blank canvas. However given my car has been treated pretty much every year since new and under sealed at delivery I knew it wouldn’t be too taxing.

I had a two product method
Lanogaurd for the majority of the underside and then Bilthamber with a 360 nozzle for the inner sills. Overall the car is in pretty decent nick given it’s been treated pretty much every year since new and is relatively low mileage.

All back together and I used a heat gun on low heat just to aid the drying process a little

As I mentioned above in my initial post I’ve owned some mega things but I really do think this little car is right up there for bang for buck and enjoyment. Roof down, heaters on its mega
