MX5 NC2 modification advice and specialist recommendations

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC2
  2. I’m based near: __Hampshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __MX5 specialists in the area and somewhere to get a manifold fitted?

Hi all,

New member here.

I’m set on getting myself my first MX5 this year (hopefully before summer). And i have a few early mods I would like to do in the first year, lowering the seat, installing a new head unit, dechroming (if it has chrome) and installing and new manifold and back box.

One of the main reasons I like the mx5 is the accessibility of the maintenence/servicing of it so will probably attempt to tackle most of these mods myself, but the one that scares me the most is the manifold.

Does anyone have any recommendations of where to get a manifold fitted in or around hampshire?

Any advice and suggestions on the other mods is more than welcome too!

Welcome to the forum

You could try MX5 parts, they are in Hampshire, hit the link near the top of this page.
(1 Orion Court, 5 Rodney Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO4 8SZ, UK)
They do mail order and have workshops. Often they offer discounts.

MAybe live with the car for a few months before committing to mods.

If you change things immediately, you wont feel the benefit of all that £££s.

If you are ever thinking of turbo charging, then dont touch the exhaust as it will all be changed later. Supercharging you can change it.

Low buck mods
Set of secondhand RX8 yellow dot roll bars, make sure you buy them with the brackets and rubbers.

Change your gearbox and diff oil

Black side indicators

Get a fast road alignment

Think about rust protection

Sort the potential leak areas before it happens

A set of Meister CRD coilovers

Turbo it

Yeah thats a good point. To be honest it probably will be the appearance mods and seat drop first then i will look to the power/drive mods later in the year.

This is incredibly helpful! Thanks for all the info!

Yes, I’d agree with that. Live with the car for 6 months. Alternatively go for a late NC2 2litre and you might be quite happy with the way it is. Better to use the money to shell out a bit more and get a later model say 2012/14. Earlier NCs are a bit rust prone.

I’m looking towards a mk3.5 so 2009 onwards, would you include these in the being less rust prone bracket?

It strikes me what when the NC came out they said the rust issues were sorted then too.

I think the later ones just haven’t got there yet, but they will!

I’ve just sold my beloved 2009 NC2 with 31k on the clock to We Buy Any Car. Above ground it was mint, underneath a different story. Since I bought the car 5 years ago it’s been a constant battle keeping rust at bay. Dinitrol treatment with annual touch ups I thought I’d sorted the rust but there are so many concealed areas so I’ve just ditched before it becomes worthless.
There are obviously exceptions but I’d be careful buying any NC2 as rust could well have taken hold. Mazda weren’t very thorough at undersealing these cars so it was then left to the owners to finish the job properly, obviously many didn’t.
If you look at the Forum topics MX5 corrosion is one of the biggest most discussed topics. They’re great wee cars but they have an Achilles heel.
