MX5 Parts exhaust rattle

My Mk 1 1600 has the MX5 parts twin stainless steel exhaust fitted, it has been on the car for about 4 years but hasn`t covered a 1000 miles, tonight the exhaust developed the infamous rattle that is mentioned in many reviews on the MX5 parts website, I no longer have the reciept for the part.

Just wondered if anyone has had a repair to cure this problem or if it is simply a throw away situation.

Thanks.

Mine as started this rattle on the Mk 1’s and as only been on for 3 or so weeks,i’ll do some readingAngry

I knew it was a known issue, but I thought I maybe had a good one, wrong !

Mine seems to rattle when the rev’s are coming down to a stop idle, and i have had to press the loud pedal a little bit to rise the revs ever so slightly to stop it ,I will being getting under to check again this weekend just to make sure that it’s not catching on body work,if not, back on the phone to mx5 parts.

i’ve got a silimar problem on my borla twin exhaust, got the paperwork, but jus can’t be asred with the hassle… truth be known, is this a common thing??

I am also beginning to think it is but the question is, why is it normal?  The exhaust on my car is not a stainless steel one but a run of the mill replacement that I bought from Unipart Automotive, that used to be Plunketts, and it has a rattle at specific engine revs.

Possibly dead thread this, but I’ve got the same issue with what I think is the factory fit exhaust. Only happens after it’s run for a while at higher revs (or I’ve rexed it round a bit) and just below 1000 revs or idling. Am going to get it looked at but this sounds like it could be a common problem?

Check the tack welds on the heat shield on the down pipe section before the cat, thats what mine turned out to be.

Fixed with a zorst clamp…happy days

Mechanic got underneath it and bent the heat shield and it stopped rattling. Turned out to be the one behind me under the boot floor. All seems well now…touch wood!

i’ve got a japspeed stainless manifold, (recent) de-cat and a borla back box, and still have the same rattle. :S :S

-I’ve the same problem on my GT3 exhaust (Lower cost stainless job i.e Stainless internals aluminiumised bits stainless back box/silencer). So presumably mine’s heat shield too as my mechanic and I have taken a look and there’s at least 1 half inches clearance around driveshaft and Diff.- So what is a ZORST CLAMP ?

I wondered this before. It’s an exhaust clamp…'zaust clamp… Just any old U-clamp. Or in fact I cured my heatshield rattle with a sturdy jubilee clip.

mine seems to be doing it aswell, might have a look after reading this!

My 1992 1.6 has had an MX5Parts twin pipe for years, and it too developed a rattle which turned out to be the small diagonal metal brace between the centre box and the driver’s side exit pipe wihch had become detached at one end - I just ripped the brace off and its been nice and quiet since, that was about 2 years ago.

seen… the welds are pretty crappy too with a similar thing on the passenger side back box

They are made by or for ILmotorsport for Mx5parts.

mine started after system being fitted for 5 yrs then found it was the heat shield coming adrift.

before i could fix it, it fell off. rattle stopped.

now i have to get under & refix shield. i suspect it was spot welded.

The rear heat shield  is held in place by 4 x 10mm bolts Joe Wink
