I fitted the MX5Parts stainless cat back on my MK1 last week including a new downpipe and cat. I was hoping for an exhaust note a bit louder than stock but not to intrusive and have seen on the forums that this exhaust is supposed to be ok. However, since fitting this exhaust, the car has become unbearable to drive with so much noise and drone… I drove the car over 400 miles at the weekend on a road trip in the hope that it my bed in and quiten down but it’s still the same loud drone. Has anyone else had this experience and know if this is fixable by adding a mid pipe silence? or am I better taking it off and flogging for something else?
Interestingly when then the box arrived it was ILMotorsport and MX5Parts branded. Is this common?
ILM and MX5parts have a long standing relationship, going back to when Scimitar International changing its name to MX5parts (yes, it used to be a supplier of parts for a Reliant coupe).
I have the twin exit version of this exhaust, and it is a drone. I fitted this exhaust, taking it off another, bcaue at the time I was debating about selling the car and keeping the other, but decided, in the end, to keep the megamile, devil I know. These are cheap exhausts, as close as you are going to get to a mass produced system. You should be able to add a mid pipe silencer to quieten it down. Unfortunately, thee days, the choice of aftermarket exhaust for the Mk1 is much less than what it was, so there aren’t too much in the way of alternatives.
It’s what they all do Tom really as described by the previous poster.
I put up with my CAT By-Pass SS pipe & IL single exit as long as I could until recently.
I’ve had the thing nearly 15 years, and had a standard zorst fitted 10 years back so you’d think I’d know better. Anyway, I took my mX5 Parts CAT bypass off and binned it…there were numerous hairline weld fails on it anyway, and got a cheap CAT from Rhino-666 here who is the specialist.
That’s done a lot to silence it back down.
These CAT SS pipes are essentially straight through anyway. A load of expensive brolloks They are about as quiet as a Who gig.
To be fair to Mx5 Parts, they did hint quite well back in the day the racket may not please everyone.
Thanks for the feedback both. I haven’t got a decat fitted, just a normal cat from cats2u so I can’t imagine how loud it would be with a decat! The exhaust from Cybox looks a bit small and with an additional silencer so I may give that a go before going back to the standard exhaust.
The Cobalt back box is great, I love how it sounds, can’t wait to fit a new manifold and sports cat down the line. It’s not too loud but certainly does make a deep resonance.
